USA Authorises 6 Airlines to Begin flights to Cuba | Secret Flying

The United States has approved scheduled flights to Cuban cities other than Havana starting this fall.

The US Department of Transportation announced on Friday that six US airlines have been licensed to operate up to 90 roundtrip flights per day to Cuba. The lucky six are American Airlines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Silver Airways, Southwest Airlines, and Sun Country Airlines. Flights are expected to operate as early as fall 2016.

Late last year, the United States and Cuba signed an agreement restoring commercial air service between the former Cold War foes for the first time in decades. President Obama announced that it was “time to begin a new journey with the Cuban people.” However, a ban on tourism to Cuba remains part of U.S. law. Travelers must meet one of 12 criteria such as being Cuban-American or taking part in educational tours or journalistic activity.

The US airlines will each be permitted to operate flights from their respective hubs in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Chicago, Minneapolis-St. Paul and Philadelphia.

The Cuban cities served will be Havana, Camaguey, Cayo Coco, Cayo Largo, Cienfuegos, Holguín, Manzanillo, Matanzas, Santa Clara and Santiago de Cuba.
