American Airlines co-pilot dies during landing in New Mexico | Secret Flying

An American Airlines co-pilot died after becoming incapacitated whilst landing at Albuquerque International Sunport Airport.

On Wednesday, American Airlines flight 1353, flying from Dallas-Fort Worth to Albuquerque, was two miles from landing when the Captain declared an emergency.

According to Flightaware, the aircraft landed safely at 3:33 p.m. It then took 4 minutes for the aircraft to taxi to the gate, where it was met by paramedics.

First officer, William “Mike” Grubbs, who became incapacitated whilst in the air, was given CPR for 40 minutes by paramedics responding to the call, before being pronounced dead.

American Airlines said in a statement that it “is deeply saddened” by Mr Grubbs’ passing. “We are taking care of First Officer Grubbs’ family and colleagues, and our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.”

In October 2015, a 57-year-old American Airlines captain died after falling ill during an overnight flight from Phoenix to Boston. That flight also landed safely after being diverted to Syracuse, NY.
