An Australian man is suing American Airlines for $100,000 for being sat next to two “grossly obese” passengers.

An American Airlines passenger is suing the airline after being sat next two overweight passengers who have apparently left him with permanent injuries. The ordeal took place on a 14-hour flight from Sydney to Los Angeles on 28th December 2015.

Michael Anthony Taylor, from New South Wales says that he now suffers from back and neck problems because he was “crushed” by his fellow passengers.

Mr Taylor claims that the man sat next to him “spilt over and encroached” into his seat. This then forced Mr Taylor to “contort his body into a series of positions including standing up, crouching, keeling and leaning forward.”

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Mr Taylor said: “I don’t hold any malice towards the people in the seats next to me, they’d paid for a ticket too. The airline could have put me in a crew seat or moved people around but they did nothing.”

Carriers around the world will be keeping a very close eye on the outcome of the lawsuit. If successful, this could potentially lead to a large amount of cases against airlines.

This week, American Airlines announced that they plan to decrease the legroom in economy seats of its newest Boeing 737 aircraft set to launch later this year.
