Tens of thousands evacuated from the Mount Agung region as hundreds of volcanic earthquakes are recorded in a single day.

Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Authority has raised the volcanic warning to the highest level after hundreds of volcanic earthquakes are recorded in a single day near Mount Agung.

According to the national volcanology centre, more than 560 volcanic tremors were detected on Monday alone.

It has been rumbling since August.

75,000 people living near the mountain have been evacuated from their homes.

Airline schedules are being affected, with Virgin Australia saying: “As a precautionary measure, some of our Bali bound flights will be making fuel stops in Darwin.

“This ensures that if an eruption occurs while the aircraft is en route, we will be able to get guests back to their originating port safely and quickly.”

The volcano is approximately 75 kilometres (47 miles) from the Indonesian beach and resort area of Kuta.

Many Balinese believe the gods are angry when the volcano rumbles. Some religious leaders say tourists behaving badly and disrespecting customs are to blame for its current activity.

When Mount Agung last erupted in 1963, nearly 2,000 people died.
