The mayor of Venice has intervened after four Japanese tourists were forced to pay €1100 for four steaks, a plate of fried fish and water.

The mayor of Venice, Italy has voiced outrage over the “shameful episode” in which four tourists said they were charged €1100 for four steaks, fried mixed fish, and water at a local restaurant.

The four Japanese men had been dining at Osteria da Luca near St Mark’s Square last Friday when they were presented with the eye-watering bill.

It is unclear why the student tourists did not refuse to pay the bill.

“We will thoroughly examine this episode over the coming days. We’ll make sure the complaint was justified,” the mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, said on Twitter.

The students reported the incident to the police upon returning to Bologna, where they are studying.

The restaurant is reported to be owned by Chinese investors and managed by an Egyptian.

A spokesperson for the restaurant told journalists he had “no recollection of any problems with Japanese customers”.
