Sacha Baron Cohen has offered to pay the fines for six Czech tourists who were arrested in Kazakhstan for wearing the character’s iconic mankini.

Earlier in the month, six Czech men were arrested in Astana, Kazakhstan after they stripped down to neon-green Borat-style mankinis while posing for photos in public.

Local media reported the tourists were arrested and each fined 22,500 Tenge ($67) for their “indecent” appearances.

Sacha Baron Cohen, the actor behind the fictional Kazakh character Borat, has come forward to help, offering to pay the fines himself.

“To my Czech mates who were arrested. Send me your details and proof that it was you, and I’ll pay your fine,” Baron Cohen wrote on Facebook.

The British actor also provided a special hotline email address: [email protected]

Despite Kazakhstan banning the film, Borat! Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, the country’s foreign minister later thanked Mr Cohen for boosting tourism.
