All supplies of jet fuel to Auckland Airport have been cut following damage to a pipeline from the airport’s sole supplier of fuel.
Thousands of airline passengers are stranded in Auckland, New Zealand after a digger on a rural property caused damage to the sole jet fuel supply pipe in the city.
Air New Zealand warned that approximately 2,000 passengers were affected by cancellations on Monday, and that trend will continue for as long as the pipeline is damaged.
Many Jetstar and Virgin Australia flights were also cancelled on Monday.
The pipeline operator said that repair work is expected to last at least a week.
Many airlines are sending their long-haul flights to make additional refuelling stops at airports in Australia and the Pacific.
Auckland Airport have asked passengers to check with their airline for the latest flight information before heading to the airport.
Because the jet fuel crisis is outside airlines’ control, affected passengers could be left out of pocket if they do not have adequate travel insurance.
