Three years after Nacala Airport was re-opened at a cost of $200m, the airport is operating at only 4% of its capacity.

In what was planned to be Mozambique’s second busiest airport, Nacala Airport only sees two flights per week.

Formerly a military airport, it underwent a major redevelopment to convert it to commercial use at a cost of $200m.

The redeveloped airport was inaugurated by President Armando Guebuza in 2014, however, for the last three years it has stood almost unused, operating at 4% capacity.

Only LAM Mozambique Airlines fly there twice a week from Maputo.

The airport was constructed by the Brazilian multi-national engineering and construction firm Odebrecht International.

Odebrecht is reported to have paid $900,000 in bribes in Mozambique between 2011 and 2014.
