Authorities have cleared an Air Berlin pilot who aborted his final landing to make a low pass around a control tower.

The federal agency which oversees air safety in Germany declared that the flyby stunt performed on Air Berlin’s last long-haul flight to Dusseldorf did not break any rules.

The Airbus A330 from Miami had more than 200 people on board.

Speaking to a German television broadcaster, the 60-year old pilot only known as Michel R., explained that he carried out the maneuver to “mark, a dignified and emotional goodbye.”

Air Berlin ceased trading in October after its largest shareholder Etihad declared it would not be providing further financial support.

Parts of the company have been sold to rival carriers.
