Budget airline Vietjet has been fined for a semi-naked display by bikini-clad models aboard a flight carrying home Vietnam’s under-23 football team.

Vietjet, a Vietnamese budget airline, has been fined by the country’s aviation authority after they put on a mid-air lingerie show for the national under-23 football squad.

The airline chartered a special flight to carry the team home from the under-23 Asian Football Championships in China, where Vietnam narrowly lost to Uzbekistan in the final.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) fined Vietjet 40 million dong ($1,760) and the plane’s chief stewardess a further 4 million dong ($176).

Vietjet have a reputation for its controversial use of bikini-clad flight attendants and raunchy marketing campaigns.

The budget airline apologised for the stunt, saying it was an “improvised move,” assuring that “relevant staff” had been disciplined.

VietJet CEO Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, the only female billionaire in Vietnam, wrote an open letter of apology to the Vietnam Football Federation and fans.
