An Italian seating manufacturer unveiled a new design for upright seating which allows airlines to increase passenger numbers by 20%.

Italian seating company, Avio Interiors, unveiled its Skyrider 2.0 at this year’s Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg.

The saddle-seat design “allows an ultra-high density in the aircraft cabin” on short-haul flights.

Passengers seated on a Skyrider 2.0 will essentially remain standing during flight. The perches that curve up in the middle, allow the passenger’s thighs to rest on either side.

The design allows 20% more people squeezed on board a plane.

Avio Interiors said in a statement: “The Skyrider 2.0 is an innovative seat, it allows an ultra-high density in the aircraft cabin. Skyrider 2.0 opens the travelling experience to a wider passenger market, creating also a useful space for the introduction [of] mixed classes boarded on the same aircraft.

“Its main feature is the original bottom that ensures an increased upright passenger position allowing installation of the seat at a reduced pitch, while maintaining an adequate comfort.”

It is not yet known whether any carriers have put in an order for the Skyrider 2.0.

In 2017, budget airline VivaColombia announced it was considering plans to remove all seats from its planes and make passengers stand.
