A British mother was shot in front of her three children after the family accidentally drove into a Brazilian slum.

On Sunday, 46-year-old Eloise Dixon, was shot twice in the stomach when a gang fired at her family’s vehicle near Rio de Janeiro. Brazil.

Police say the family of five took a wrong turn after having asked for directions. They were in search of the waterfront district of Angra dos Reis – a coastal resort about 90 miles (145 km) from Rio.

When the family accidentally drove into a favela, a group of local men told the family to get out of the car.

Local police chief Bruno Gilaberte said that because they didn’t understand the order they received, they just carried on driving and were shot at.

The mother was hit twice in the abdomen but her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

It is not uncommon in Brazil for tourists to be attacked when accidentally straying into slums. Visitors are urged to be vigilant when they travel to Rio de Janeiro due to high levels of violent crime, including carjackings.
