Fraport AG, the operator of Frankfurt’s international airport, says it is working on plans for electric air taxi services.

Startup Volocopter and Fraport AG are working together to bring electric air taxis to Frankfurt Airport.

The idea is to ease congestion on the road.

“In the future, Volocopter Ports could link existing urban transportation junctions with one another and provide connections to and from Frankfurt Airport,” Volocopter said in a statement.

The company says its aircraft, based on drone technology and flight tested in Dubai, are quiet, safe and local emissions-free.

The drones are planned to operate pilotless when the legal framework is in place.

Boeing and Uber are also working on their own air taxis.

Last year, Frankfurt Airport saw more than 69 million passengers pass through.
