Chinese customs officials caught a woman attempting to smuggle 24 gerbils after a trip to mainland China.

A Taiwanese woman was discovered with 24 gerbils strapped to her legs after a flight from mainland China to the island of Kinmen.

Officials noticed the woman had an ”abnormal proportion”, and was pulled aside for questioning.

Individually wrapped in bags, the 24 gerbils were strapped to the woman’s legs and covered by a skirt.

According to reports, the woman claimed the animals were for a friend and she had purchased them from a pet store in China.

Customs, however, were not convinced as each gerbil could be sold for as much as $125.

The Taiwan East Coast Guard referred the woman to the prosecutor.
