Two South African Airways flight attendants have been arrested in Hong Kong on drug trafficking charges.

Two South African Airways flight attendants were caught smuggling $3 million worth of cocaine into Hong Kong.

The incident is being described as the largest drug trafficking case involving flight crew members.

The 39-year-old woman and 35-year-old man were travelling on separate flights from Johannesburg to Hong Kong when they were caught.

According to reports, the female flight attendant had 12 kilograms of cocaine in her luggage, whilst the male flight attendant had 6 kilograms.

“The flights landed in Hong Kong on September 22 and 24,” a SAA spokesperson said.

“In the incident involving the first flight, a crew member was initially detained for questioning on September 23, while in the second incident a crew member was arrested on arrival on September 24.”

It is unclear if the first crew member cooperated with authorities and informed on their colleague arriving on the later flight.

Both flight attendants have since appeared in court.

The maximum penalty upon conviction in Hong Kong is life imprisonment.
