US joins the EU in banning Pakistan International Airlines over license scandal | Secret Flying

United States bans PIA flights.

The US Department of Transportation said it has revoked permission for Pakistan International Airlines to fly to the United States, citing concerns over pilot certifications.

The announcement brings the US in line with other countries in banning the airline after the shocking revelation that almost a third of Pakistan’s pilots may have falsified their qualifications.

Last week, the European Union’s aviation safety agency announced that Pakistan’s national airline would not be allowed to fly into Europe for at least six months.

In a letter, the agency said it was “concerned about the validity of the Pakistani pilot licenses and that Pakistan, as the State of operator, is currently not capable to certify and oversee its operators and aircraft in accordance with applicable international standards.”

The allegation is the result of a provisional inquiry report for the PIA plane crash in Karachi on May 22 which killed 97 people.

Investigators have blamed the crash on pilot error.
