A 30-year-old American woman, Liliana Goodson, has been sentenced to one year in prison after bringing a gold-plated pistol into Australia. The incident occurred in April 2023 when customs officials discovered the unauthorised weapon in her luggage upon her arrival at Sydney Airport.

Goodson, who claimed she carried the 24-carat gold-plated handgun, valued at approximately $3,000, for personal protection, had travelled to Australia to attend a clown school. She was arrested after customs officers uncovered the firearm along with ammunition during a routine inspection of her belongings.

During her court hearing at Sydney’s Downing Centre local court, Goodson pleaded guilty to charges of illegally importing a firearm and ammunition. The court sentenced her to a 12-month jail term, with four months to be served in full-time custody. Following the verdict, Goodson was taken directly into custody, where she was made to remove her jewellery before being handcuffed and escorted out of the courtroom.

The court heard that Goodson had researched online whether she could legally bring the weapon into Australia. However, she later claimed she forgot the firearm was in her luggage when she arrived. When questioned by customs officers about whether she was carrying any prohibited items, Goodson initially denied having any. Her deception was quickly exposed when a customs officer pointed out the weapon in her bag, to which she reportedly replied, “Oh…”

The presiding judge emphasised the need for deterrence in sentencing Goodson, citing the serious nature of the offences and the importance of upholding Australia’s strict gun control laws. The judge highlighted that such violations pose significant risks and necessitate robust penalties to discourage similar behaviour by others in the future.

Goodson’s case has drawn attention to Australia’s uncompromising stance on firearms, particularly when it comes to unauthorised imports.
