Cozumel International Airport (CZM)

Overview: Cozumel International Airport is located on the island of Cozumel, about 70 km (43 miles) south of Cancun. It is the primary airport for visitors whose final destination is Cozumel itself, bypassing the ferry from the mainland.

• Single passenger terminal with separate areas for domestic and international arrivals.

• Taxi:

Which Cancun Region Airport Should You Choose?

Choosing the right airport depends almost entirely on your final resort or hotel location. Cancun International (CUN) remains the dominant hub with the most flight options and is best for Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, and most Riviera Maya resorts. Cozumel (CZM) is the dedicated choice for the island of Cozumel. Tulum (TQO) is the new, time-saving option specifically for the Tulum area and points south.

Airport Transfers Between Cancun Region Airports

The airports in the Cancun region operate as separate facilities with no airside connections. Transferring between them requires exiting one airport, traveling by ground, and checking in again at the next. This is rarely necessary or advised for connecting flights but could be relevant for multi-destination itineraries.

Is it safe to book flights between different Cancun-area airports?
No. Unlike some global hubs, there are no airlines or tickets that combine flights across CUN, CZM, and TQO as a single connection. Any airport change would involve two separate tickets and a lengthy, uncertain ground transfer. This carries a very high risk of missing your onward flight due to immigration, baggage claim, traffic, and check-in delays. It is not recommended under any normal circumstances.

Typical transfer times between airports:

• CUN ↔ TQO: Around 1.5 – 2.5 hours by road, depending on traffic and exact destinations.
• CUN ↔ CZM: This is a complex transfer requiring a 60-90 minute taxi/bus to Playa del Carmen, a 40-minute ferry crossing, and then a taxi on Cozumel. Total time is at least 3-4 hours, excluding wait times.
