Hangzhou Airports Guide
Hangzhou Airports Guide: Terminals, Transport, and Essential Information
Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province and home to the famed West Lake, is served by a modern, spacious international airport. As a major economic and tech hub near Shanghai, its airport is a key gateway to eastern China, offering extensive domestic connectivity and a growing number of international flights. This guide provides essential information about Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport, including its massive terminals, transportation options, and tips for navigating this major Chinese hub.
Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (HGH)
Overview: Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport is the main airport serving the Hangzhou metropolitan area and the wider Zhejiang province. Located approximately 27 km (17 miles) east of downtown Hangzhou, across the Qiantang River, it is a major hub for Air China and Hainan Airlines, and a focus city for many domestic carriers. The airport has undergone significant expansion, featuring two large terminal buildings.
Terminals: HGH operates two main terminal buildings, T1 and T3, which are connected by a free inter-terminal shuttle bus. (Note: T2 is not in use).
- Terminal 1 (T1): The older terminal, now used primarily for international and regional flights. It handles all international arrivals and departures, as well as flights to Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.
- Terminal 3 (T3): A massive, state-of-the-art terminal opened in late 2022. It is one of China’s largest airport terminals and handles all domestic flights. It is incredibly modern, with vast, open spaces, extensive shopping, and automated facilities.
Critical: Domestic and international flights operate from completely separate terminals (T3 and T1, respectively). The free shuttle bus between them takes about 10-15 minutes. Always confirm your terminal with your airline.
Getting to and from HGH:
-
Metro (Line 1 & 7 & 19):
The most efficient way to reach the city. The airport has its own metro station, Xiaoshan International Airport Station, located between T1 and T3.- Line 19 (Airport Express): The fastest link, connecting the airport to Hangzhou East Railway Station (the main high-speed rail hub) in about 20 minutes.
- Line 1 & 7: Provide connections to downtown Hangzhou (like Longxiangqiao for West Lake) and other parts of the metro network. Journey to the city centre takes 45-60 minutes.
-
Airport Shuttle Buses:
A network of shuttle buses connects both terminals to key locations in Hangzhou, including the main railway stations (East, Central, South), major hotels, and nearby cities like Shaoxing and Huzhou. Tickets are sold at counters in the arrivals halls. -
Taxi:
Official taxi ranks are located outside the arrivals level of both T1 and T3. Fares to downtown Hangzhou (like West Lake) are metered and cost approximately CNY 100-150 ($14-$21 USD), plus tolls. Have your destination written in Chinese to show the driver. -
Ride-hailing (Didi Chuxing):
The dominant app in China. Designated pick-up points are available at both terminals. You will need a Chinese SIM card and payment method to use the local app. -
Inter-city High-Speed Rail:
Hangzhou East Railway Station is a major hub on China’s high-speed rail network, easily reached via Metro Line 19 from the airport. This is the best way to travel to Shanghai (45-60 mins), Nanjing, or other Chinese cities.
Best for: All travellers to Hangzhou, the Zhejiang province, and as a convenient alternative airport for the Shanghai region (about 1 hour by high-speed rail).
Navigating Between Terminals 1 and 3
Free Inter-terminal Shuttle Bus: A 24/7 free shuttle bus runs frequently between T1 and T3. The ride takes 10-15 minutes. Stops are clearly marked at the ground transportation center of each terminal.
For Connections: If you have a connecting flight in HGH and need to change between domestic (T3) and international (T1), you must collect your bags, clear customs/immigration if arriving internationally, take the shuttle bus, and re-check in at the other terminal. Allow at least 3-4 hours for such connections on separate tickets.
Which Hangzhou Airport Should You Choose?
There is only one commercial airport: Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (HGH). The critical task is ensuring you go to the correct terminal (T1 for international, T3 for domestic) for your flight.
As an Alternative to Shanghai: Many travellers find flying into HGH and taking the high-speed train to Shanghai a faster and more pleasant overall journey than flying into Shanghai’s crowded Pudong (PVG) airport, especially for destinations in southern Shanghai or Hangzhou itself.
Essential Information for Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport (HGH)
Before You Go:
- Visa: Most travellers require a visa to enter China. Apply well in advance. A 144-hour visa-free transit is available for eligible passengers with confirmed onward tickets to a third country, which can be used if traveling from HGH to another country via land/air.
- Check-in: Arrive at least 2.5 hours before domestic flights and 3 hours before international flights. The terminals, especially T3, are enormous, and walking distances can be long.
- WeChat & Alipay: Essential for payments in China. Set them up with a linked payment method before travel. Many airport vendors do not accept foreign credit cards directly.
- Language: English signage is good in the terminals, but spoken English among general staff is limited. Have your destination written in Chinese characters.
Upon Arrival:
- Immigration (International – T1 only): Lines can be long. Have your passport, completed arrival card, and visa ready. Fingerprint scans are standard.
- Baggage & Customs: After collecting luggage, you must pass through a customs screening. Declare any restricted items.
- SIM Cards / Connectivity (T1 Arrivals): Purchase a Chinese SIM card (China Mobile, China Unicom) from counters in the international arrivals hall. You will need your passport. Crucial for internet access.
- Ground Transport: Follow clear signs in the arrivals hall for the Metro, Taxi, Airport Buses, or the Inter-terminal Shuttle.
Departing:
- Confirm Your Terminal! This cannot be overstated. International flights depart from T1, domestic from T3.
- Security: Security is thorough. Have your passport and boarding pass ready at multiple checkpoints.
- Amenities: Terminal 3 is particularly impressive, with extensive dining, shopping, and even indoor gardens. It’s designed to be a destination in itself.
Travel Tips for Hangzhou
Metro is Best: The airport metro link (especially Line 19) is fast, cheap, and avoids traffic. It’s the best way to reach Hangzhou East Railway Station for high-speed trains.
West Lake Access: From the airport, take Metro Line 1 to Longxiangqiao Station to reach the eastern shore of the famous West Lake, the heart of Hangzhou’s tourism.
Tech Hub: Hangzhou is the headquarters of Alibaba. The airport reflects this with high-tech amenities and efficient design.
Scenic Beauty: Hangzhou is considered one of China’s most beautiful cities. The airport is your gateway to the classic landscapes of West Lake, tea plantations, and ancient canals.
Bottom line: Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport is a world-class, massive facility where terminal awareness is everything. Using the excellent Metro link, especially the Airport Express Line 19, will save time and money. Prepare for standard Chinese travel procedures (visas, SIM cards, mobile payment) and allow ample time to navigate the large terminals. For visitors to eastern China, it serves as an excellent, often more convenient alternative to the Shanghai airports.
