Kuala Lumpur Airports Guide
Kuala Lumpur Airports Guide: Terminals, Transport, and Essential Information
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s vibrant capital, is served by two major international airports that handle distinctly different types of air traffic. Understanding which airport you’re flying into or out of is crucial, as they are located far apart and serve different airline alliances and travel purposes. This guide explains both Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (Subang), including terminal layouts, airline operations, and clear explanations of how to navigate Malaysia’s primary aviation gateways.
Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) – KLIA & klia2
Overview: Kuala Lumpur International Airport (IATA: KUL) is Malaysia’s primary international gateway and one of Southeast Asia’s major aviation hubs. Located approximately 45 km (28 miles) south of Kuala Lumpur city center in Sepang, Selangor, it consists of two main passenger terminals: KLIA (Main Terminal) and klia2 (the low-cost carrier terminal). The airport serves as the main hub for Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia.
Terminals:
- KLIA (Main Terminal): The original, architecturally striking terminal designed by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa. It features a main building surrounded by satellite terminals connected by an Automated People Mover (APM) and train. Serves:
- Full-service airlines (Malaysia Airlines and its Oneworld partners, SkyTeam, Star Alliance carriers)
- Long-haul international flights
- First and Business class facilities
- klia2: The world’s largest purpose-built low-cost carrier terminal, located about 2 km from KLIA. Serves:
- AirAsia and AirAsia X (all flights)
- Other low-cost carriers
- Domestic and regional international flights
Features a large, mall-like layout with extensive shopping and dining options.
Getting to and from KLIA/klia2:
-
KLIA Ekspres (Airport Express Rail):
The fastest option to the city. A non-stop train connecting both KLIA and klia2 to KL Sentral station in just 28 minutes from KLIA (33 minutes from klia2). KL Sentral is Kuala Lumpur’s main transportation hub with connections to the LRT, MRT, monorail, and intercity trains. Trains run every 15-20 minutes from approximately 5 AM to 1 AM. -
KLIA Transit:
The same rail line as KLIA Ekspres but makes intermediate stops at Bandar Tasik Selatan, Putrajaya & Cyberjaya, and Salak Tinggi. Slightly slower but useful if your destination is near one of these stations. -
Airport Buses:
Several companies operate comfortable, air-conditioned coach services from both terminals to various points in Kuala Lumpur including KL Sentral, Pudu Sentral, and One Utama. Journey takes 60-90 minutes depending on traffic. Significantly cheaper than the train. -
Taxis and Ride-Hailing (Grab):
Official airport taxis operate on a coupon system purchased at counters in arrivals. Fixed fares to various zones in KL. Ride-hailing services like Grab (Southeast Asia’s Uber) are widely used and often cheaper. Designated pickup zones exist at both terminals. -
Car Rental:
All major international and local rental companies have desks in the arrivals halls of both terminals. -
Private Transfers:
Many hotels and tour operators offer pre-booked transfers, convenient for families or groups.
Best for: Most international travelers, long-haul flights, full-service airlines (use KLIA), and travelers flying AirAsia or other low-cost carriers (use klia2).
Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB) – Subang Airport
Overview: Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (IATA: SZB), commonly known as Subang Airport or Skypark, is Kuala Lumpur’s original international airport. Located approximately 20 km (12 miles) west of the city center in Subang, Selangor, it now primarily serves as a terminal for turboprop flights, private aviation, and some regional jet services operated by Firefly and Malindo Air (now Batik Air Malaysia).
Terminals:
- Terminal 3 (Main Passenger Terminal): Also called Skypark Terminal, a modern and compact facility handling all scheduled passenger flights from Subang.
- Terminal 2 & 1: Handle private aviation, maintenance, and cargo.
Getting to and from Subang Airport:
-
Taxis and Ride-Hailing (Grab):
The primary options. The journey to KL city center takes 30-60 minutes depending on traffic. Official taxi coupons available. -
Public Buses:
RapidKL bus services connect Subang to other parts of the Klang Valley, but are not direct or convenient for tourists with luggage. -
Car Rental:
Available but with fewer options than KLIA.
Best for: Domestic flights to peninsular Malaysia destinations (like Penang, Langkawi, Johor Bahru) on Firefly or Batik Air, private aviation, and travelers whose final destination is in western KL or Petaling Jaya (much closer than KLIA).
Which Kuala Lumpur Airport Should You Choose?
Check your airline and ticket carefully:
- KLIA (Main Terminal): Malaysia Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, British Airways, Lufthansa, etc.
- klia2: All AirAsia and AirAsia X flights, plus other low-cost carriers like Cebu Pacific, Scoot.
- Subang Airport (SZB): Firefly (using turboprops) and Batik Air Malaysia for specific domestic and regional routes (e.g., to Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia).
Critical: The terminals at KLIA (Main Terminal and klia2) are in the same airport complex but are separate buildings. A free shuttle bus connects them, but allow at least 45-60 minutes for transfers including security re-clearance if needed. Subang Airport (SZB) is a completely separate airport on the opposite side of the city.
Essential Airport Information
Visa: Many nationalities receive a 90-day visa-free entry stamp upon arrival. Ensure your passport has at least 6 months validity.
Currency: ATMs and currency exchange counters are plentiful. Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) is the local currency.
SIM Cards & Connectivity: Purchase a local SIM card (Celcom, Maxis, Digi) at counters in the arrivals halls. Data is cheap. Free Wi-Fi is available at all terminals.
Facilities: Both KLIA terminals are modern with extensive shopping (including duty-free), diverse dining options (from local Malaysian food to international chains), prayer rooms, lounges, and hotels (within KLIA and connected to klia2).
Departure Tips:
- KLIA/klia2: Arrive at least 2.5-3 hours before international flights, 2 hours before domestic. Security and immigration lines can be long.
- Subang: Arrive 1.5-2 hours before flights; it’s a much quicker process.
- International departure tax is included in airline tickets.
Transport to Key Kuala Lumpur Destinations
From KLIA/klia2 to:
- KLCC / Petronas Twin Towers: Take KLIA Ekspres to KL Sentral (28-33 mins), then switch to the Kelana Jaya LRT line to KLCC station. Total ~50-60 mins.
- Bukit Bintang (Shopping & Entertainment): KLIA Ekspres to KL Sentral, then Monorail to Bukit Bintang station. Total ~55-70 mins.
- Batu Caves: Most easily reached by Grab/taxi from the city (not efficient directly from airport).
From Subang Airport to: Damansara, Petaling Jaya, or western parts of KL are significantly closer and quicker than from KLIA.
Domestic and Regional Flight Connections
Key Domestic Destinations from KLIA/klia2: Penang, Langkawi, Kota Kinabalu (Sabah), Kuching (Sarawak), Langkawi, Johor Bahru.
Key Regional Destinations: Singapore, Bangkok, Jakarta, Bali, Manila, Hong Kong, Taipei, Ho Chi Minh City, major Chinese cities, Australian cities, and extensive Middle Eastern connections.
AirAsia’s Hub: klia2 serves as AirAsia’s primary hub, offering an incredibly vast network across Southeast Asia, East Asia, Australia, and the Middle East at low cost.
Airport Transfer Between KLIA and Subang (SZB)
Not Recommended for Connecting Flights: The airports are approximately 70-80 km apart on opposite sides of KL. The journey can take 60-90 minutes or more in traffic.
If You Must Transfer: Use Grab or a pre-booked taxi. Allow at least 4-5 hours between flights. Airlines do not typically sell connecting itineraries between these airports.
Special Considerations
For AirAsia Passengers at klia2:
- The terminal is massive. Allow time to walk to your gate.
- Self-check-in kiosks and bag drops are extensive.
- There is a huge range of affordable food and shopping options airside.
For Transit Passengers: KLIA is a good transit hub with clear signage. Transit hotels are available airside in both KLIA (Sama-Sama Express) and klia2 (Capsule by Container Hotel).
Language: Malay and English are widely spoken. All signage is in both languages.
Bottom line: Kuala Lumpur offers a dual-airport system with a clear division: KLIA/klia2 for most international and low-cost travel, and Subang for specific domestic/regional services. The KLIA Ekspres train provides an excellent, reliable link to the city from KLIA/klia2. Always double-check which airport and terminal your flight uses, as a mistake could cause you to miss your flight due to the significant distance between facilities.
