Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO)

Overview: Sheremetyevo (IATA: SVO) is Moscow’s busiest airport and the main hub for the national flag carrier, Aeroflot, and its SkyTeam partners. Located about 30 km (19 miles) northwest of central Moscow, it is the primary gateway for most international flights from Asia, the Middle East, and friendly states, as well as a vast domestic network.

Terminals:

• Terminals B & C: Older terminals, now mainly used for domestic and some regional flights.
• Terminals D, E, & F: Modern, interconnected terminals forming the main complex. Terminal F is one of the largest in Europe. These handle most international and premium domestic flights. The terminals are connected by a free, 24/7 inter-terminal train (Aeroexpress) and moving walkways.

Getting to and from Sheremetyevo (SVO):

Domodedovo International Airport (DME)

Overview: Domodedovo (IATA: DME) is a major international and domestic airport located about 45 km (28 miles) southeast of central Moscow. It has historically been a hub for oneworld alliance members and serves a wide array of international and domestic carriers, with a strong focus on flights to Russian regions, the CIS, and Asia.

• Single Integrated Terminal: One large, modern terminal building handling all flights. It is known for its efficiency and relatively straightforward layout.

Getting to and from Domodedovo (DME):

• Aeroexpress Train:
  The recommended method. Non-stop trains run from the airport to Paveletsky Railway Station in central Moscow in 40-50 minutes. Connect to the Metro at Paveletskaya station (Circle and Green lines).

Which Moscow Airport Should You Choose?

The decision is largely dictated by your airline and flight route.

Airport Transfers Between Moscow Airports

Transferring between Moscow’s airports is a significant undertaking due to the city’s immense size and traffic. They are not connected airside.

Is it feasible to connect between Moscow airports on the same day?
It is extremely risky and not recommended on separate tickets. Even on a single ticket with a long layover, it is a complex process requiring you to clear immigration/customs, collect baggage, and undertake a lengthy ground transfer.

Transfer Options & Times:

• Aeroexpress to City Center + Another Aeroexpress: The most reliable method. Take the Aeroexpress from your arrival airport to its central railway station, then take the metro or a taxi to the railway station serving your departure airport, and catch the corresponding Aeroexpress. Total time: 2.5 to 4+ hours.
• Direct Taxi: Can be faster in light traffic but is expensive and utterly unreliable during rush hours. Journey times between airports range from 60 to 150+ minutes.

Allow an absolute minimum of 5-6 hours between flights, and consider it only if you have no other choice.

• Use the Aeroexpress: For any airport, the Aeroexpress train is the gold standard for speed, reliability, and avoiding road traffic. Book tickets online or at the station.
