Seoul Airports Guide
Seoul Airports Guide: Terminals, Transport, and Essential Information
Seoul, the capital of South Korea, is served by two major international airports that handle its immense passenger traffic. Unlike a single-hub system, Seoul’s air traffic is strategically split between a primary international mega-hub located on an offshore island and a much older, city-center airport. Choosing the correct airport is critical, as they are on opposite sides of the metropolitan area and serve completely different flight profiles.
This guide details both airports serving the Seoul Capital Area, including terminal layouts, airline alliances, and clear, practical information on how to get to and from each one efficiently, whether you’re headed to downtown Seoul, a business district, or a connecting flight.
Incheon International Airport (ICN)
Overview: Incheon International Airport is Seoul’s primary international gateway and one of the world’s busiest and highest-rated airports. Located on a reclaimed island approximately 70 km (43 miles) west of central Seoul, in the city of Incheon, it serves as the main hub for Korean Air and Asiana Airlines. ICN handles virtually all long-haul international flights and most international-to-international connections in Northeast Asia.
Terminals:
- Terminal 1 (T1): The original terminal, home to Korean Air, SkyTeam alliance partners, and many other international airlines.
- Terminal 2 (T2): A stunning, modern terminal opened in 2018, home to Asiana Airlines, Star Alliance partners, and Air France/KLM. It is connected to T1 by an automated people mover (APM) within the secure transit area and by free shuttle buses landside.
Both terminals are vast, efficient, and filled with amenities, including cultural performances, indoor gardens, and extensive duty-free shopping. Always confirm your terminal as transfers between them can take 15-20 minutes.
Getting to and from ICN Airport:
-
AREX (Airport Railroad Express):
- Express Train (Non-stop): Runs directly from ICN to Seoul Station in downtown Seoul in 43 minutes. Comfortable, with reserved seating. Fare: approx. ₩9,500.
- All-Stop Train (Commuter): Makes 11 stops, including at Gimpo Airport (GMP), Digital Media City, and Hongik University Station. Takes about 60 minutes to Seoul Station. Cheaper (approx. ₩4,150) and connects to more subway lines.
-
Airport Limousine Bus:
A comprehensive network of comfortable, direct buses to virtually every major neighborhood and hotel district in Seoul (e.g., Gangnam, Myeongdong, Jamsil, Itaewon). Buses depart frequently, offer luggage storage, and are an excellent door-to-door option, especially with heavy bags. Fares range from ₩10,000 to ₩17,000. Tickets are purchased at counters outside arrivals. -
Taxi:
Available outside both terminals. Standard Taxis to central Seoul cost ₩70,000-₩100,000 (45-75 mins). International Taxis (with English-speaking drivers) and Deluxe/Mobleum Taxis (black vans) are more expensive but offer fixed fares and premium service. The trip is long and expensive; only recommended for groups or if buses/trains are not operating. -
Private Transfer (KAL Limousine, etc.):
Pre-booked sedan or van service. Convenient but the most expensive option. -
Car Rental:
Available, but driving in Seoul is not recommended for most visitors.
Best for: All international long-haul flights, premium travel, international connections, and travelers who prioritize comfort and amenities.
Gimpo International Airport (GMP)
Overview: Gimpo International Airport is Seoul’s older, city-center airport located just 18 km (11 miles) west of downtown Seoul. It primarily handles domestic flights to cities like Busan, Jeju, and Daegu, and a significant number of short-haul international flights to China, Japan (Tokyo-Haneda, Osaka-Kansai), and Taiwan. It is a major hub for domestic carriers and is much more convenient for access to most of Seoul than ICN.
Terminals:
- Domestic Terminal: Handles all flights within South Korea.
- International Terminal: A separate, smaller terminal for short-haul international flights.
The two terminals are connected by a short, covered walkway (5-10 minute walk). Gimpo is compact, efficient, and has far shorter check-in and security times than ICN.
Getting to and from GMP Airport:
-
Seoul Subway (Metro):
The fastest and cheapest way to the city. Airport is directly connected to Gimpo Airport Station, served by Line 5, Line 9, and the AREX line. You can reach most parts of Seoul within 30-50 minutes for about ₩1,500-₩2,500. -
AREX All-Stop Train:
Connects GMP to ICN (approx. 30 mins) and Seoul Station (approx. 20 mins). -
Airport Limousine Bus:
Available but less necessary than at ICN due to the excellent subway link. -
Taxi:
Much more affordable than from ICN. A trip to central Seoul (e.g., Myeongdong) takes 30-45 minutes and costs ₩25,000-₩40,000.
Best for: Domestic flights within Korea, short-haul international flights to East Asia, and travelers whose final destination is within Seoul city limits.
Which Seoul Airport Should You Choose?
Your choice is almost always determined by your flight’s origin:
Incheon International Airport (ICN) is your arrival point for all flights from outside East Asia (e.g., USA, Europe, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Australia) and for most long-haul flights.
Gimpo International Airport (GMP) is your airport if:
- You are flying domestically within South Korea (e.g., from Jeju, Busan).
- You are on a short-haul international flight from China, Japan (except some Tokyo-Narita flights), or Taiwan.
- Your priority is fastest access to downtown Seoul and you have a choice between ICN and GMP for your route (e.g., some flights from Tokyo-Haneda vs. Narita).
Strategic Booking Tip: If flying from within Asia, check if your destination is served from GMP. The time and cost savings on ground transport are massive. For example, a flight from Tokyo-Haneda to GMP is far more convenient than from Tokyo-Narita to ICN.
Airport Transfers Between ICN and GMP
Transferring between Seoul’s airports is a common and well-supported necessity for travelers connecting from a long-haul flight at ICN to a domestic flight at GMP (or vice-versa).
Is it safe to book connecting flights between ICN and GMP?
Yes, if booked on a single ticket. Korean Air, Asiana, and other carriers sell these connections with legally permissible minimum times (often 2.5-3 hours), and you are responsible for the ground transfer. On separate tickets, it is risky but doable with a long enough layover.
Transfer Time & Best Method: The airports are about 45 km apart.
- AREX All-Stop Train: The best and most reliable option. Trains run every 6-12 minutes, take about 30-35 minutes, and cost only ₩4,150. The stations are inside both airport terminals.
- Airport Limousine Bus (#6101, #6102): Takes 45-70 minutes depending on traffic. Less predictable than the train.
- Taxi: 45-90+ minutes, expensive (₩45,000-₩70,000), and subject to severe traffic on the Incheon International Airport Expressway.
Connection Process (International ICN → Domestic GMP):
- Arrive at ICN (T1 or T2).
- Clear Korean immigration and passport control.
- Collect all checked baggage.
- Clear customs.
- Exit into the public arrivals hall.
- Take the AREX train (or bus/taxi) to GMP.
- Check in at the Domestic Terminal at GMP and drop bags.
- Clear domestic security and proceed to your gate.
Minimum Recommended Time: Even on a single ticket, the airline’s minimum is tight. For peace of mind or on separate tickets, allow at least 4 hours between scheduled flights.
Practical Tips for Seoul Airports
- Currency: South Korean Won (₩). ATMs and currency exchange are abundant in arrivals halls at both airports.
- Wi-Fi & SIMs: Free, high-speed Wi-Fi is available throughout both airports. Pre-paid SIM cards and portable Wi-Fi (Pocket WiFi) egg rentals are readily available in the arrivals areas.
- Transit Tours at ICN: If you have a long layover (5+ hours), ICN offers free transit tours of Seoul and Incheon. Sign up at the Transit Tour desk in the departure transit area.
- Early Baggage Check-in: In downtown Seoul (at Seoul Station and Hongdae), you can check your luggage and get your boarding pass for Korean Air/Asiana flights a day before departure, allowing you to travel to the airport hands-free.
- ICN’s Cultural Experience: The airport features a Korean cultural museum, traditional craft demonstrations, and indoor skating rink/golf in T2.
- Language: English signage is excellent. Most airport staff speak functional English.
Bottom line: For long-haul international travel, you will use Incheon (ICN)—take the AREX Express train or a limousine bus to the city. For domestic and regional Asian flights, try to use Gimpo (GMP) for its superior convenience—take the subway. For connections between the two, the AREX All-Stop train is fast, cheap, and reliable.
