Xi’an, the ancient capital of China and home to the Terracotta Army, is served by one major international airport. Located away from the city center, it is a modern hub with excellent domestic connectivity and a growing number of international routes, primarily to other parts of Asia.

Xi’an Xianyang International Airport (XIY)

Overview: Xi’an Xianyang International Airport is the main airport serving Xi’an and the entire Shaanxi Province. It is located approximately 40 km (25 miles) northwest of downtown Xi’an, in the neighboring city of Xianyang. It is a major hub for China Eastern Airlines and Hainan Airlines, and a focus city for many other Chinese carriers.

Terminals:

• Terminal 2 (T2): The older terminal, now used primarily by China Eastern Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, and some other domestic airlines.
• Terminal 3 (T3): The newer, much larger, and main terminal. It handles all international flights, as well as domestic flights for airlines like Air China, Hainan Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, and all low-cost carriers (Spring Airlines, Lucky Air, etc.). This is where most travelers will arrive.

Note: Terminal 1 is no longer in use. A free inter-terminal shuttle bus operates between T2 and T3. The walk between them is long and not recommended.

  The fastest and most reliable public transport option. Line 14 of the Xi’an Metro connects both T2 and T3 directly to the city.   Buses are comfortable and relatively inexpensive (approx. CNY 25), but subject to traffic. The journey to the Bell Tower area takes 60-90 minutes.

• Taxi & Ride-Hailing (Didi Chuxing):
  Official taxi ranks are located outside both T2 and T3 arrivals. Ensure you get in the official queue. Fares to downtown Xi’an (e.g., Bell Tower) are metered and cost approximately CNY 120-150, plus a CNY 10-15 highway toll. The journey takes 45-75 minutes depending on traffic.
  
  Ride-Hailing: Didi Chuxing (China’s Uber) is widely used. The app works with an international number, but having a local SIM card/data is very helpful. Designated pick-up points are at the airport.
• Pre-Booked Private Transfer:
  Many hotels and tour companies offer this service. A driver will meet you in arrivals with a sign. This is a reliable, hassle-free option, especially for first-time visitors or late-night arrivals.
• Car Rental:
  Available at the airport, but not recommended for navigating central Xi’an. Useful only if you are planning immediate trips to surrounding areas like Huashan Mountain.

Best for: All international and domestic travelers to Xi’an. This is the only commercial airport for the city.

Essential Travel Information for Xi’an Airport (XIY)

Visa & Immigration:
Ensure you have a valid Chinese visa before travel (check requirements for your nationality). Immigration lines at T3 can be long. Have your passport, completed arrival card, and hotel details ready.

Currency:
The Chinese Yuan (CNY or RMB). ATMs and currency exchange counters are available in the arrivals hall of T3. It is advisable to have some local currency for transport. While Alipay and WeChat Pay are ubiquitous, a foreign card may not work without a Chinese bank account; cash is a reliable backup.

Language:
English signage is present but not universal. Having your destination written in Chinese characters (or saved on your phone) is extremely helpful for taxi drivers. Most airport staff and shuttle bus ticket sellers will speak basic English.

SIM Cards & Wi-Fi:
Purchasing a local SIM card or portable Wi-Fi device at the airport (counters in T3 arrivals) is highly recommended for navigation and communication. Free airport Wi-Fi often requires a Chinese mobile number for SMS verification, which a local SIM solves.

Domestic Connections:
XIY is a major domestic hub. If connecting from an international flight to a domestic one, you will need to collect your baggage, clear customs, and then re-check in for your domestic flight in the appropriate terminal (likely T3). Allow at least 2.5-3 hours for this process.

For international departures from T3, arrive at least 3 hours early. For domestic flights, 2 hours is sufficient. T3 is large; allow time to walk to your gate. Check-in and security can have long queues.

Ground Transport to Key Destinations

To Bell Tower / City Wall / Muslim Quarter: Take the Metro Line 14 to Xi’an North Station, transfer to Line 2 to Yongningmen or Bell Tower stations. Alternatively, take Airport Shuttle Bus Line 2 or a taxi.

To Xi’an Railway Station (for conventional trains): Take Airport Shuttle Bus Line 1 or the Metro Line 14 to Xi’an North, then transfer to Line 4 to Wulukou station.

To Terracotta Army Museum (Bingmayong): The museum is about 50 km from the airport. The most efficient way from the airport is to take a taxi (CNY 180-220, 1 hour). There is no direct public bus from the airport; you would need to go to the city center first.

To Huashan Mountain: Take a taxi or pre-booked car from the airport (approx. 1.5-2 hours drive). Alternatively, take a shuttle bus or train from Xi’an North Station.

To Hotels: Most major hotels are within the city center or along the metro lines. The metro or a taxi from the airport is your best bet.

Which Airport Should You Use?

For all travel to Xi’an, you will use Xi’an Xianyang International Airport (XIY). There is no other commercial passenger airport serving the city.

High-Speed Rail Alternative: For travel from other major Chinese cities (like Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu), the high-speed train is a fast and comfortable alternative to flying. Trains arrive at Xi’an North Railway Station, which is conveniently connected to the city center by Metro Line 2 and to the airport by Metro Line 14.

Bottom Line: You will arrive at the large but modern Xi’an Xianyang International Airport (XIY), likely Terminal 3. For a fast and reliable transfer to the city, take Metro Line 14.
