Mid-air diversion triggered by misunderstood passenger behaviour.
Passengers travelling on a Southwest Airlines flight from Nashville to Fort Lauderdale experienced an unexpected diversion after concern arose about a fellow traveller’s behaviour during the journey.
Southwest Airlines Flight 2094 departed Nashville International Airport on Friday evening and was heading toward Florida when several passengers began noticing a man’s phone sounding periodic alerts. Witnesses later explained that the notifications appeared to be a prayer reminder on his mobile device.
According to passengers seated nearby, the phone produced an alert roughly every ten minutes. After each notification sounded, the man quietly began praying in a foreign language. While this appeared to be part of a personal religious practice, some travellers said they did not understand what was happening and became uneasy as the situation continued.
One passenger, a high school student from Williamson County who asked not to be identified publicly, recorded video of events inside the cabin shortly before authorities boarded the aircraft. The student described how the passenger was speaking in another language while praying and repeatedly asked flight attendants about the location of his bag.
People nearby also noticed the man appeared nervous and was perspiring, which contributed to growing concern among some passengers. As uncertainty spread through the cabin, crew members were informed about the situation.
After roughly an hour of increasing unease among passengers, the flight crew made the decision to divert the aircraft as a precaution. The plane was redirected to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport so authorities could assess the situation on the ground.
Once the aircraft landed in Atlanta, it was directed to a remote area of the airport’s tarmac. Emergency vehicles surrounded the plane while passengers remained seated inside as officials prepared to board.
Travellers reported that they waited for more than an hour before law enforcement officers entered the aircraft. A tactical team from the Atlanta Police Department eventually boarded and moved through the cabin toward the passenger who had drawn attention during the flight.
Officers approached the man and instructed him to stand before escorting him off the aircraft. The removal took place while other passengers remained seated and observed the situation from their seats.
After reviewing the circumstances, federal authorities later confirmed that there was no credible threat connected to the incident. The Federal Bureau of Investigation said the situation appeared to stem from a misunderstanding rather than any criminal activity, and no charges were filed.
Southwest Airlines also addressed the event in a statement, explaining that the crew chose to divert the aircraft out of caution. The airline said the decision was made in the interest of passenger safety after concerns were raised during the flight.
The company apologised to customers for the disruption and the lengthy delay caused by the diversion. Airline representatives reiterated that the safety of passengers and crew members remains their highest priority during any in-flight situation.
After the passenger was removed and the investigation concluded, travellers remained in Atlanta for several hours while arrangements were made for them to continue their journey.
Passengers eventually boarded another aircraft to complete the trip to Florida. The flight finally arrived in Fort Lauderdale at around 3 a.m., roughly six hours later than originally scheduled.
