New alliance partnership expands regional connectivity.

Philippine Airlines (PAL) is preparing to join the oneworld alliance after accepting an invitation to become its 16th member airline. The move will significantly expand the alliance’s presence in the Philippines and strengthen its position across Southeast Asia.

Once PAL officially joins, oneworld will gain access to 31 destinations throughout the Philippines. Many of these locations have not previously been available through oneworld frequent flyer programmes, giving members more travel options within the region.

The announcement was made during the IATA Annual General Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, where both parties confirmed they had signed a memorandum of understanding. Philippine Airlines is expected to complete the membership process within the next year.

The addition of PAL fills an important gap in the alliance’s Southeast Asian network. As the Philippines’ leading full-service airline, it operates an extensive domestic route system while also serving numerous international destinations across Asia, Australia and North America.

The partnership is expected to benefit frequent flyers on both sides. Members of oneworld loyalty programmes will be able to earn and redeem points on Philippine Airlines flights, while PAL passengers will gain access to alliance perks such as lounge access, priority services and reciprocal mileage benefits.

Philippine Airlines has already developed strong relationships with several oneworld carriers through codeshare and partnership agreements. Collaborations with airlines including American Airlines, Qatar Airways and Qantas have strengthened ties in recent years and paved the way for full alliance membership.

Despite joining oneworld, PAL is expected to continue maintaining partnerships with selected airlines outside the alliance. This will allow the carrier to preserve existing relationships while also benefiting from the broader reach of its new alliance network.

The move is expected to improve connectivity for travellers, enhance loyalty programme benefits and strengthen oneworld’s presence in one of Asia’s fastest-growing aviation markets. As the integration progresses, passengers can look forward to a wider range of travel opportunities across both regional and long-haul routes.
