Atlanta Airports Guide
Atlanta Airports Guide: Terminals, Transport, and Essential Information
Atlanta, Georgia, is served primarily by one of the world’s busiest and most efficient passenger airports. As a major global hub and the primary base of operations for Delta Air Lines, it connects passengers to destinations across North America and around the world. This guide explains the massive airport’s layout, its internal train system, and transport options for reaching the city.
Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
Overview: Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (IATA: ATL) has been the world’s busiest passenger airport by traffic since 1998. Located approximately 11 km (7 miles) south of downtown Atlanta, it is a colossal facility that functions as the central hub for Delta Air Lines and a focus city for Southwest Airlines. The airport is a city unto itself, designed for high-volume connections.
Terminals:
- Domestic Terminal: Handles all domestic flights not operated by Delta. It houses the Main Atrium with check-in for various airlines, security, and the Plane Train entrance.
- Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal (Terminal F): A dedicated, state-of-the-art terminal for all international arrivals and departures. It features its own check-in, security, and customs facilities.
- Concourse T, A, B, C, D, E, and F: The airport has seven concourses (T, A, B, C, D, E, and F) arranged in a linear fashion. Concourses T, A, B, C, and D are primarily domestic (Delta and others). Concourse E handles some domestic and international flights. Concourse F is part of the International Terminal.
The Plane Train & Walkability: All concourses and terminals are connected by the automated, underground Plane Train, which runs 24/7 and takes about 5 minutes end-to-end. They are also connected by pedestrian walkways (the “Moving Walkways”)—walking from the Domestic Terminal to Concourse F takes about 30-40 minutes.
Getting to and from Atlanta City Centre (Downtown, Midtown, Buckhead):
-
MARTA Train (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) – Best Public Transit:
The ATL Airport Station is located inside the Domestic Terminal baggage claim level. The Gold and Red lines provide a direct, quick rail link to downtown Atlanta (e.g., Five Points, Peachtree Center) in about 15-20 minutes. This is by far the most efficient and affordable way to reach the city centre, avoiding all traffic. A one-way fare is $2.50. Trains run from approximately 5 am to 1 am. -
Rental Car (Most Popular for Business & Exploration):
The Rental Car Center is a massive facility located off-airport. Free, frequent ATL SkyTrain trains connect all terminals to the Rental Car Center in about 5 minutes. All major rental companies are located here. Renting a car is highly recommended if you plan to explore Atlanta’s spread-out neighborhoods or travel beyond the city. -
Ride-Hailing (Uber, Lyft) & Taxis:
Designated pick-up zones for ride-hailing are on the west end of the Domestic Terminal’s North and South baggage claim levels. For the International Terminal, the zone is on the lower level. Taxis are available at stands outside both terminals. A trip to downtown costs $30-$40, to Midtown/Buckhead $40-$60, heavily dependent on traffic. -
Hotel & Private Shuttles:
Some hotels, particularly those near the airport, offer complimentary shuttle service. Shuttles pick up passengers on the lower level of the Domestic Terminal’s North and South sides. - Intercity Buses (Greyhound, etc.): The Greyhound bus station is connected to downtown via MARTA; there is no direct service from the airport.
Best for: All domestic and international travellers, especially those connecting through a major US hub. It is designed for efficiency and scale.
Other Aviation Facilities
DeKalb–Peachtree Airport (PDK): A busy general aviation and corporate airport northeast of the city. Not used for commercial airline service.
Fulton County Airport (FTY): Another general aviation airport west of the city. Not for commercial passengers.
Note: For commercial flights to Atlanta, you will always fly into Hartsfield–Jackson (ATL).
Transiting Through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport
ATL is arguably the world’s premier domestic connection hub. Transits are routine and streamlined.
For Domestic to Domestic Connections: This is ATL’s specialty. Follow signs for your connecting gate. You will likely remain airside, possibly changing concourses via the Plane Train. Connection times can be very short (legal minimum for Delta is as low as 35 minutes).
For International to Domestic Connections (Most Common International Transit): All passengers must disembark, clear US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in the International Terminal (Concourse F or E), collect baggage, re-check it just outside customs, clear security, and then take the Plane Train to their domestic departure concourse. This process is mandatory and can take 1.5-3 hours. Global Entry is a major time-saver here.
Facilities: The airport is a mini-mall with countless food, retail, and service options in every concourse, from fast food to high-end dining and shopping. Free WiFi is available. Numerous Delta Sky Clubs and other airline lounges are located throughout.
Essential Information for Travellers
US Customs Preclearance – NOT Available: Unlike some airports, ATL does not have preclearance for flights departing to the USA. All international arrivals must clear CBP upon landing in Atlanta.
TSA PreCheck & CLEAR: ATL has dedicated TSA PreCheck lanes at all security checkpoints. CLEAR is also widely available. These services are highly recommended to bypass often very long general security lines, especially in the Domestic Terminal.
Parking: Massive on-site parking includes the Hourly, Daily, and Economy lots, all connected by the free ATL SkyTrain or shuttles. Reserve parking online for better rates.
Arrival Process (International):
- Disembark at the International Terminal (Concourse F or E) and follow signs to US Customs.
- Clear CBP (have passport, visa/ESTA, and customs declaration ready).
- Collect baggage from the carousel in the customs hall.
- Re-check your bags on the conveyor belt just outside the customs exit if you have a connecting flight.
- Follow signs to “Domestic Connections” or “Ground Transportation.” You will need to take the Plane Train to the Domestic Terminal for most ground transport options.
Departure Tip: For domestic flights, arriving 1.5-2 hours before departure is generally sufficient, but allow extra time during peak hours (early morning, late afternoon) due to security lines. For international departures, arrive at least 3 hours early to allow for check-in and security.
Navigational Tip: Pay close attention to signage for Domestic vs. International terminals and for the Plane Train. The scale of the airport can be daunting, but its layout is logical.
Bottom line: For getting into the city, MARTA is unbeatable for speed and cost. For connections, follow the clear signage and allow ample time for international arrivals to clear customs. Embrace the scale and efficiency of the world’s busiest airport—it’s an experience in itself.
