Emirates will operate two Airbus A380s between Dubai and Muscat.
What do you do when you have too many Airbus A380s in your fleet?
Well Emirates have decided to break its own record for the “world’s shortest flight operator.”
From July 1, the Dubai-based carrier will use two double-decker Airbus A380s to fly daily to Muscat International Airport.
This distance between Dubai and Muscat…just 211 miles.
The service between the two cities will have three classes, with a total capacity of 519 people.
It is unclear whether first class passengers will be able to have a shower during the 1 hour and 15 minute journey.
“The introduction of the A380 services to Muscat means more of our customers will have the opportunity to experience our industry-leading products onboard, and will also enhance choice and travel preferences as they plan their journeys,” said Sheikh Majid Al Mualla, divisional senior vice president of Emirates’ Commercial Operations Centre, in a statement.
Emirates will be breaking its own previous record for the shortest superjumbo flight.
The airline operated an A380 service between Dubai and Doha – a distance of 235 miles.
However in 2017, Emirates cancelled all fights to Doha due to the Saudi-led blockade on Qatar.
In February, Airbus announced it will end production of the A380 after failing to secure orders.
Emirates currently has 110 A380s in service and another 13 on order.
Airbus will deliver its last A380s in 2021.
From December, British Airways will operate daily flights between Dammam in Saudi Arabia to Bahrain, which are just 54 miles apart. The route will be served by a Boeing 777 with four classes.
