GLOSSARY
What is a frequent flyer program?
Frequent flyer programs are essentially loyalty cards within the air travel industry. Flying with the same airline or alliance can earn you points, which can increase your status within the program and be redeemed for future flights.
There are a no restrictions on how many programs you can sign-up for, however, they all require you to fly frequently to retain your status.
How do frequent flyer programs work?
Traditionally, programs work based on mileage alone. The longer your flight, the more miles/points you earn. Some programs have now focused on the price of the flight so points are based on how much you have spent rather than how far you have travelled.
Once you have earned a certain number of points you can choose how to spend them. The most common option is upgrading a flight to a premium cabin.
How do I get status?
Not only do points provide members with redemption opportunities but they also are used to determine the level of membership.
Great benefits can be had depending on your status level within the program.
Remember, gaining status on a program also provides benefits with other airlines in the same alliance.
How do I find the best frequent flyer program?
It’s not just about which airline provides the best program. You should also take into consideration your home airport and travel habits.
For example, if you are based in London and often fly with Qatar Airways to Asia, then joining a program in the Oneworld alliance will be a good idea as both British Airways and Qatar Airways are in this alliance.
