Abu Dhabi Airports Guide
Abu Dhabi Airports Guide: Terminals, Transport, and Essential Information
Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, is served by two primary airports. Unlike a distributed network, the city’s commercial aviation is focused on a major international mega-hub while a second airport handles specific low-cost and regional traffic. Understanding which airport and terminal you are using is critical for planning transport, accommodation, and connection times.
This guide explains both airports serving Abu Dhabi, including IATA codes, terminal layouts, and clear, plain-English explanations of how to get to and from each one.
Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH)
Overview: Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) is the emirate’s primary international gateway and the global hub for Etihad Airways. Located approximately 30 km (19 miles) east of the city centre, it is a major transit point for flights between Europe, Asia, and Australia.
Terminals:
- Terminal 1 (Main Terminal): The original terminal handles a variety of international airlines and long-haul flights not operated by Etihad.
- Terminal 3 (Etihad’s Primary Hub): Dedicated exclusively to Etihad Airways and its partner airlines. It is connected to Terminal 1 and offers premium facilities, including the renowned First & Business Class Lounge.
- Terminal A (The New Midfield Terminal): A brand-new, state-of-the-art terminal that opened in late 2023. It is one of the world’s largest airport terminals and is designed to consolidate operations, eventually serving as the primary terminal for all airlines, significantly increasing capacity and efficiency.
Free, frequent shuttle buses connect all terminals airside and landside.
Getting to and from Abu Dhabi City Centre:
-
Airport Taxi (Official Taxis):
The most convenient door-to-door option. Official airport taxis (silver with a golden logo) are metered and readily available outside arrivals. A trip to the Corniche or city centre typically costs around AED 75-100 and takes 30-45 minutes. -
Ride-Hailing (Uber/Careem):
Uber and Careem operate reliably in Abu Dhabi. Designated pick-up points are available at each terminal. -
Public Bus (Most Affordable):
The A1 bus service runs frequently between the airport terminals and the city centre, terminating at Al Wadha Central Bus Station. The journey takes about 45-60 minutes and costs only a few Dirhams. -
Car Rental:
All major international and local car rental companies have desks in the arrivals halls of each terminal. -
Hotel & Private Transfers:
Many hotels offer complimentary or paid shuttle services. Private chauffeur services can also be pre-booked.
Best for: Long-haul flights, premium travel with Etihad Airways, global connections, and international transit passengers.
Al Bateen Executive Airport
Overview: Al Bateen Executive Airport is dedicated exclusively to private, VIP, and business aviation. Located just 10 km (6 miles) from the city centre, it is one of the few private jet airports in the Middle East with a dedicated terminal for executive travel. It does not handle commercial airline traffic.
Terminals:
- Executive Terminal: A single, luxurious terminal facility offering discrete check-in, VIP lounges, concierge services, and direct aircraft access for private flyers.
Getting to and from the City:
-
Private Transfer / Chauffeur:
The primary mode of transport, often arranged by the flight operator or FBO (Fixed-Base Operator). -
Taxi & Ride-Hailing:
Available, but less common than at AUH due to the clientele’s preference for pre-arranged transport.
Best for: Private jet travellers, business executives, and VIPs seeking discrete and efficient service.
Zayed International Airport (Formerly Al Ain International Airport – AAN)
Note: Al Ain International Airport, located in the Abu Dhabi emirate’s eastern city of Al Ain (approx. 160 km from Abu Dhabi City), was rebranded as Zayed International Airport. It primarily handles limited cargo and occasional charter flights. For nearly all commercial passengers, Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) is the relevant airport.
Transiting Through Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH)
AUH is a major transit hub, especially for Etihad Airways and its partners. The experience is generally streamlined.
For Short Layovers (2-5 hours): Follow the clear “Connections” signs. Terminals 1 & 3 are connected airside, allowing for transit without clearing immigration. You can access duty-free shops, a wide range of dining options, and lounges. Free WiFi is available.
For Long Layovers (6+ hours):
- Transit Tours: Etihad sometimes offers free Abu Dhabi transit tours for qualifying passengers with long layovers. Check at the transfer desk.
- Lounge Access: Etihad’s premium lounges in Terminal 3 are accessible for business/first class passengers and certain loyalty tiers. Independent pay-per-use lounges like “Plaza Premium” are also available.
- Airport Hotel: The Aerotel Abu Dhabi is located airside in Terminal 1, offering rooms by the hour for transit passengers.
- Explore the City: With a layover of 6+ hours, consider a taxi or tour to visit nearby attractions like the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (allow 3-4 hours minimum).
Essential Information for Travellers
Visa on Arrival: Citizens of many countries (including the EU, UK, US, Australia, etc.) are eligible for a free visa on arrival valid for 30 or 90 days. Always verify the latest requirements based on your nationality before travel.
Baggage: For transit passengers on a single ticket, baggage is typically checked through to the final destination. Confirm this at your initial check-in. Left luggage facilities are available in Terminal 1.
Currency: The UAE Dirham (AED) is the local currency. ATMs and currency exchange are available throughout all terminals. Credit cards are universally accepted.
Important Tip: When flying Etihad Airways, you will almost certainly use Terminal 3 or the new Terminal A. Always double-check your terminal on your booking or the airport website, especially during the transition phase to the new Terminal A.
Airport Transfer Between AUH and Dubai
Many travellers visit Abu Dhabi as part of a trip to the UAE that also includes Dubai. The two cities are about 130 km (81 miles) apart.
Getting to Dubai from AUH:
-
Intercity Taxi:
A direct taxi from AUH to central Dubai can cost AED 250-350 and takes 60-90 minutes depending on traffic, especially during peak hours. -
Ride-Hailing (Uber/Careem):
A more expensive but convenient option for door-to-door service to Dubai. -
Intercity Bus (Most Affordable):
The E100 bus departs from AUH and goes to Al Ghubaiba Bus Station in Dubai for around AED 25. The journey takes approximately 2 hours. -
Car Rental:
Renting a car provides flexibility but requires navigating UAE highways and paying for tolls (Salik in Dubai, Darb in Abu Dhabi).
Plan Conservatively: Always allow significant extra time for road travel between the two emirates due to potential traffic congestion.
