Antigua and Barbuda, the twin-island nation in the Caribbean, is served primarily by one international airport on Antigua. A smaller airport serves Barbuda and regional connections. As a major tourism destination in the Eastern Caribbean, its main airport is a key hub for flights from North America and Europe. V. C. Bird International Airport (ANU)

Overview: V. C. Bird International Airport (IATA: ANU) is the main international gateway to Antigua and Barbuda. Located on the northeast coast of Antigua, approximately 8 km (5 miles) from the capital, St. John’s, it is the largest and busiest airport in the Eastern Caribbean. It serves as a hub for regional carrier LIAT (in liquidation/restructuring) and for Caribbean airlines, and welcomes direct flights from the US, Canada, UK, and Europe.

Terminals:

• Single, Integrated Terminal: The airport operates from one main terminal building that handles both international and regional arrivals and departures. A major terminal expansion and modernization project was completed in 2015, providing a modern, air-conditioned facility.
• Layout: The terminal is divided into separate areas for arrivals (ground floor) and departures (upper floor), with clear signage. Gates are within easy walking distance.

Key Feature: The open-air design in parts of the terminal allows the Caribbean breeze to flow through, giving an immediate island feel upon arrival.

Getting to and from Antigua (Hotels & St. John’s):

• Pre-Booked Private Transfer / Hotel Shuttle (Most Recommended):
  The most seamless option for tourists. Most hotels, resorts, and villas offer pre-bookable airport transfer services. A driver will meet you outside the arrivals hall with a sign. This is highly advised, especially for first-time visitors and those staying in remote resorts.
• Official Airport Taxis:
  Taxis are readily available outside the arrivals hall. They are not metered; fares are fixed by the government based on destination zones. A fare list should be displayed. Confirm the fare to your hotel in Eastern Caribbean Dollars (XCD) or USD before getting in. A trip to St. John’s costs approx. US$12-$15, to Dickenson Bay US$15-$20, to English Harbour US$25-$35. It is reached via a short inter-island flight from Antigua (ANU) on carriers like SVG Air, ABM Air, or Fly Monserrat. The flight takes approximately 15-20 minutes.

Transport on Barbuda: Taxis and rental cars (often 4×4 vehicles) are available at Codrington Airport to take you to your hotel or the famous Pink Sand Beach.

Other Airstrips

L. R. H. (Lighthouuse) Airport (Not for Commercial Traffic): A small, private airstrip on Antigua, not used for scheduled flights.

Transiting Through V. C. Bird International Airport

ANU is a common transit point for travellers heading to other Caribbean islands.

For International to Regional Transits (e.g., from London to another Caribbean island): You must clear Antiguan immigration, collect baggage, clear customs, and then re-check in for your regional flight in the departures hall. Allow at least 2.5-3 hours between flights for this process. Some airlines may have interline agreements for baggage.

Facilities: The terminal offers a good selection of duty-free shops (especially for liquor), souvenir stores, cafes, and a restaurant/bar. Free WiFi is available. There is a VIP lounge accessible for business class passengers or via paid entry.

Essential Information for Travellers

Visa & Entry: Citizens of the US, Canada, UK, EU, and many Commonwealth countries do not require a visa for tourist stays (typically up to 6 months).
