Brisbane Airports Guide
Brisbane Airports Guide: Terminals, Transport, and Essential Information
Brisbane, the capital of Queensland and Australia’s third-largest city, is served by one major international airport and a smaller general aviation field. Brisbane Airport (BNE) is a key gateway to Australia, offering extensive domestic connections and growing international services, particularly to Asia and the Pacific. Its two-terminal layout and transport links are designed for efficiency.
Brisbane Airport (BNE)
Overview: Brisbane Airport (BNE) is the primary international and domestic airport serving Brisbane and South East Queensland. Located approximately 17 km (11 miles) northeast of the Brisbane city centre, in the suburb of Eagle Farm, it is the third-busiest airport in Australia. It serves as a major hub for Qantas, Virgin Australia, and Jetstar.
Terminals: BNE operates two separate passenger terminals, located 4 km apart. They are not connected airside.
- Domestic Terminal: A large, recently upgraded terminal that handles all flights within Australia. It is divided into separate areas for Qantas/QantasLink and for Virgin Australia, Jetstar, Rex, and other regional carriers. Both groups have their own check-in halls and security, but are connected post-security via a central retail and food court area.
- International Terminal: A modern terminal handling all flights to and from destinations outside Australia. It is used by all international airlines, including Qantas international services.
Critical: Always confirm which terminal you need (Domestic or International) with your airline. A free, frequent AirTrain service connects the two terminals, as well as the airport to the city. The journey between terminals takes about 5 minutes.
Getting to and from BNE:
-
AirTrain:
The fastest and most reliable public transport. This dedicated rail line connects both the Domestic and International terminals directly to the Brisbane city centre (Roma Street, Central, Fortitude Valley stations) in approximately 20 minutes. It also connects to other suburban lines. Trains run every 15-30 minutes. Highly recommended for its speed and avoidance of road traffic. -
Taxi & Ride-Hailing (Uber, Ola, Didi):
Taxis are available at ranks outside both terminals. Ride-hailing services have designated pickup zones (follow signs). A trip to the city centre typically costs $45-$65 AUD and takes 20-40 minutes, heavily dependent on the Gateway Motorway and bridge traffic. -
Coachtrans / Con-X-ion Shuttle:
Shared and private door-to-door shuttle bus services that can be pre-booked to hotels and suburbs. Pickup is outside the terminals. -
Public Bus (Translink):
A cheaper but slower option. Route 590 connects the International Terminal to the Brisbane City via the suburbs. Not ideal for first-time visitors with luggage. -
Car Rental:
All major companies have desks in the arrivals halls of both terminals. The rental car facilities are located nearby.
Best for: All commercial international and domestic travel to Brisbane.
Archerfield Airport (ACF)
Overview: A general aviation airport located about 12 km southwest of the city centre. It is a hub for private aviation, flight training, charter flights, and aerial work. It does not handle scheduled passenger airline services.
Terminals: General aviation facilities.
Getting There: Accessible only by private vehicle or taxi.
Best for: Private jets, charter flights, pilot training, and aerial surveys.
Which Brisbane Airport Should You Choose?
For all airline passengers, Brisbane Airport (BNE) is the only choice. The critical step is confirming whether your flight operates from the Domestic Terminal or the International Terminal. Domestic terminals for Qantas and Virgin/Jetstar are under the same roof but have separate check-in areas.
Essential Travel Information for Brisbane Airport (BNE)
Terminal Strategy – Domestic vs. International:
- Domestic Terminal: If flying Qantas, use the Qantas check-in area. For Virgin Australia, Jetstar, Rex, etc., use the other check-in hall. Both areas connect airside.
- International Terminal: All overseas flights use this terminal, including Qantas international services.
- Transfer Between Terminals: If you arrive domestically and need to connect to an international flight (or vice-versa), you must collect your baggage, exit the terminal, and take the AirTrain (or a taxi) to the other terminal. Allow a minimum of 90-120 minutes for this process, including re-check-in and security.
Arrival Process at BNE (International Terminal):
- Disembark & Follow Signs: Follow signs for “Arrivals” and “Baggage Claim.”
- Passport Control: Present your passport and incoming passenger card. Australian and New Zealand citizens can use SmartGates.
- Baggage Claim: Collect all checked luggage.
- Biosecurity & Customs: Australia has very strict biosecurity laws. Declare ALL food, plant, animal, or wooden items on your incoming passenger card. All luggage is screened or inspected by biosecurity officers. Fines for non-declaration are severe.
- Arrivals Hall: Exit to the public area where you’ll find the AirTrain station, taxi ranks, and shuttle pickup.
Departure Process at BNE:
- Arrive Early: For domestic flights, arrive 2 hours early. For international flights, arrive 3 hours early. Check-in and security, especially for international flights, can have long queues.
- Check-in: Go to the correct terminal and airline area.
- Security & Immigration:
- Domestic: Pass through security to the gate area.
- International: Pass through security, then clear Australian Exit Immigration (passport control).
- Gate Area: Both terminals have a good range of shopping and dining. Duty-free is available in the International Terminal. Boarding is typically via jet bridges, though some regional flights may board via tarmac.
Ground Transport in Detail:
- Best for Speed & Reliability: AirTrain. It is unaffected by road traffic and delivers you to Central Station in the heart of the city.
- Best for Door-to-Door / Groups: Taxi or Ride-Hailing. Be aware of peak traffic on the M1/Gateway Motorway.
- To Gold Coast: Take the AirTrain to Roma Street Station and transfer to a G:link (tram) or coach service, or book a direct shuttle (Coachtrans/Con-x-ion) from the airport. Driving takes 60-90+ minutes.
- To Sunshine Coast: A direct shuttle or rental car is best. Driving takes about 90 minutes.
Money & Connectivity:
- Currency: Australian Dollar (AUD). ATMs and currency exchange are available in both terminals.
- SIM Cards: Stands for Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone are in the International Terminal arrivals hall, selling prepaid SIMs and data packages.
- Wi-Fi: Free unlimited Wi-Fi is available throughout both terminals.
Local Tips:
- If you have time before an international departure, the International Terminal has an outdoor observation deck with great views of the runway.
- Brisbane’s weather is generally sunny and warm. The airport terminals are air-conditioned.
- Consider purchasing a go card for seamless travel on AirTrain, buses, and ferries in Brisbane. You can buy and top-up at the AirTrain stations.
Bottom Line: Brisbane Airport is modern, well-organized, and blessed with an excellent rail link. Your primary task is to know your terminal (Domestic or International) and to use the AirTrain for the fastest, most reliable transfer to the city. For international arrivals, respect Australia’s strict biosecurity rules. With good planning, BNE provides a smooth and efficient gateway to Queensland.
