Chengdu Airports Guide: Terminals, Transport, and Essential Information

Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province and a major economic hub in Western China, is a key international and domestic gateway. The city operates two significant commercial airports: one serving as the primary international and domestic hub, and a newer, second airport that has become one of the world’s largest. Understanding which airport your flight uses is absolutely critical, as they are located on opposite sides of the metropolitan area.

This guide explains both airports serving Chengdu, including IATA codes, terminal layouts, and clear, plain-English explanations of how to get to and from each one.

Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU)

Overview: Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport was Chengdu’s primary airport for decades and remains a major and busy aviation hub. Located in the Shuangliu District, approximately 16 km (10 miles) southwest of the city center (Tianfu Square), it now primarily handles domestic flights, regional international routes, and is a major hub for Sichuan Airlines and Chengdu Airlines.

Terminals:

Terminal 1 (T1): Currently handles all international and regional flights (to Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and other international destinations).
Terminal 2 (T2): Handles the vast majority of domestic flights within mainland China.

Note: The two terminals are connected by a free, 24-hour inter-terminal shuttle bus. The journey takes about 10-15 minutes. Follow clear signs for the “Inter-terminal Transfer Bus” (航站楼间中转巴士) outside the arrivals level of each terminal.

Getting to and from Shuangliu Airport (CTU):

Chengdu Metro (Subway) Line 10: The most efficient and affordable way to reach the city center. Line 10 connects directly to both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 via underground stations. It provides direct access to key transfer hubs like Taipingyuan (transfer to Line 3, 7, 9) and the city center. Journey to Tianfu Square takes about 35-45 minutes.
Airport Shuttle Bus: Several official airport bus lines connect CTU to major locations across the city, including the city’s main bus station, key hotels, and other transport hubs. Tickets are purchased at booths outside arrivals. Useful if your destination is close to a shuttle bus stop.
Taxi / Ride-hailing (Didi Chuxing): Widely available. Designated taxi ranks are outside the arrivals hall of each terminal. For ride-hailing apps like Didi (China’s Uber), follow app instructions to the designated pickup zones, which are usually in the parking garages. A taxi to the city center takes 30-50 minutes and costs approximately ¥80-¥120, heavily dependent on traffic.
Private Transfer: Can be pre-booked through hotels or travel services for door-to-door convenience.

Best for: Most domestic travelers within China, regional international flights, and passengers flying Sichuan Airlines. Convenient for those staying in or traveling to the southern/western parts of Chengdu.

Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU)

Overview: Opened in June 2021, Chengdu Tianfu International Airport is a colossal new airport built to relieve pressure on CTU and serve as Chengdu’s future main air gateway. It is located in Jianyang City, approximately 50 km (31 miles) southeast of Chengdu’s city center. It is designed as a major international hub and handles an increasing number of domestic and long-haul international flights, particularly for airlines like China Eastern, China Southern, and many international carriers.

Terminals:

Terminal 1 (T1): Handles international flights.
Terminal 2 (T2): Handles domestic flights.
Integrated Transportation Center (GTC): A massive central complex between the two terminals that houses metro lines, high-speed rail, buses, taxis, and rental cars. All ground transport is accessed here.

Note: The two terminals are connected by an underground moving walkway within the GTC, making transfers between them relatively easy on foot (10-15 minute walk).

Getting to and from Tianfu Airport (TFU):

Chengdu Metro Line 18 & Line 19 (Airport Express): Line 18 is a high-speed metro line connecting TFU directly to the South Railway Station (Chengdunan) in the city in about 35-45 minutes. Line 19 connects TFU to the city’s main railway hub, Chengdu Railway Station, and other urban centers. This is the recommended method for most travelers heading to downtown Chengdu.
High-Speed Rail (HSR): The Chengdu-Zigong high-speed railway has a station (Tianfu Airport Station) beneath the GTC. It offers direct, ultra-fast connections to key hubs like Chengdu East Railway Station (approx. 20 minutes) and onward to cities across Sichuan. Check schedules for availability to your specific destination.
Airport Shuttle Bus: Official shuttle buses (“Airport Express”) connect TFU to several key locations in downtown Chengdu, including Chunxi Road and Shuangliu Airport (CTU). Travel time to downtown is 60-90+ minutes depending on traffic.
Taxi / Ride-hailing (Didi Chuxing): Available but very expensive and time-consuming due to the long distance. A taxi to the city center can take 60-90 minutes and cost ¥200-¥300 or more. Not recommended for standard trips to downtown.
Private Transfer: Can be pre-booked, offering comfort for the long journey.

Best for: Long-haul international travelers, passengers flying China Eastern/China Southern, and those whose final destination is in the eastern/southern parts of Sichuan Province. Also used for many new domestic routes.

Which Chengdu Airport Should You Choose?

This is the most critical decision for your trip. Always double and triple-check your airport code when booking flights and before departing for the airport.

Check Your Ticket: Is the airport code CTU (Shuangliu) or TFU (Tianfu)? They are not interchangeable.
General Guidance:
- If you are flying Sichuan Airlines or Chengdu Airlines domestically, you will likely fly from CTU.
- If you are on a long-haul international flight (e.g., to Europe, North America, Australia) or flying China Eastern/China Southern, you will most likely use TFU.
- Many domestic flights on all airlines are split between the two airports. There is no simple rule—you must check your itinerary.
Key Consideration: TFU is much farther from the city center. Factor in an extra 1-2 hours of ground transport time and cost compared to CTU.

Transfers Between Chengdu Airports (CTU ↔ TFU)

Important: The two airports are approximately 80 km (50 miles) apart. Transferring between them is a major journey, not a simple connection.

Is it safe to book connecting flights between CTU and TFU?
No. It is extremely risky and not advised unless you have a layover of 8 hours or more. They are considered separate cities for aviation purposes. You would need to collect baggage, exit one airport, undertake a 1.5 to 3-hour ground transfer (depending on traffic), re-enter the other airport, check-in again, and clear security. This is virtually guaranteed to cause a missed connection on separate tickets.

Transfer Options (If Absolutely Necessary):

Official Airport Shuttle Bus: Direct buses run between the two airports. The journey takes about 90 minutes, but can be longer in traffic. Buses depart from the ground transportation center of each airport.
Metro + High-Speed Rail Combo: This is the fastest public option (approx. 1.5 hours). From CTU, take Metro Line 10 to South Railway Station, transfer to Line 18 or Line 7 to East Railway Station, then take a high-speed train to Tianfu Airport Station.
Taxi/Private Car: The most direct but expensive option (60-90 minutes, ¥300-¥500). Highly susceptible to traffic delays.

Bottom Line: Avoid booking itineraries that require an airport change in Chengdu. If you must transfer, allow a minimum of 5-6 hours between scheduled flight times.

Key Tips for Both Airports

Language & Technology:

Signs are bilingual (Chinese/English), but staff English proficiency can be limited. Have your destination written in Chinese characters.
Ensure you have mobile data (a Chinese SIM or eSIM) to use mapping apps (Baidu Maps, Amap) and ride-hailing apps (Didi), which are essential for navigation.
Major international payment methods may not be accepted for taxis or small vendors. Have a Chinese payment app (Alipay/WeChat Pay) set up or sufficient Chinese Yuan (RMB) cash.

Domestic Flight Note: For domestic flights within China, remember to use your original passport (not just an ID card) for check-in and security if you are a foreign national.

Bottom Line: Confirming your correct airport (CTU or TFU) is the single most important step when traveling to or from Chengdu. For CTU, the metro is ideal. For TFU, the high-speed metro (Line 18/19) is your best bet for reaching the city. Never assume your flight is from the closer airport.
