A secondary, domestic-focused airport has recently opened to handle growing tourism traffic, creating a crucial choice for travelers depending on their final destination. Understanding which airport to use is key for a smooth start to your Sri Lankan adventure.

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB)

Overview: Bandaranaike International Airport, commonly known as Colombo International Airport, is the primary and busiest gateway to Sri Lanka. It is located in Katunayake, approximately 35 km (22 miles) north of Colombo city centre. CMB handles all long-haul international flights, the majority of regional flights, and serves as the main hub for the national carrier, SriLankan Airlines.

Terminals:

Terminal 1 (Main Terminal): A single, recently expanded terminal complex that handles both international arrivals and departures. It is divided into different piers and concourses but operates as one integrated building.
Terminal 2 (Proposed/Future): A new terminal is under construction to handle future growth, but as of now, all operations are from Terminal 1.

Note: The terminal is modernizing but can feel busy and chaotic, especially during peak arrival times. Follow signs carefully.

Getting to and from Bandaranaike Airport (CMB):

Airport Express Bus (Route 187 – E3): The most affordable and relatively comfortable public transport option. Air-conditioned buses run from the airport to Colombo Fort (the main bus and train hub) and Colombo Pettah. The journey takes 60-90 minutes depending on traffic. The bus stop is located just outside the arrivals terminal.
Train (Airport – Colombo Fort): A dedicated airport train line connects the airport station (a short shuttle/tuktuk ride from the terminal) to Colombo Fort Station. The journey takes about 45 minutes and is scenic, passing through local areas. It is inexpensive but infrequent (check schedule in advance). Ideal for avoiding road traffic.
Taxi / Pre-paid Taxi: The most common and convenient door-to-door option. Ignore touts inside the terminal. Instead, use the official pre-paid taxi counter located in the arrivals hall. You pay a fixed fare based on your destination zone, receive a voucher, and are assigned a registered driver. This is the safest and most reliable taxi method.
Ride-hailing (PickMe / Uber): The PickMe app is the local equivalent of Uber and is widely used in Sri Lanka. It can be cheaper than pre-paid taxis. The pickup point is in the car park; you may need to walk a short distance from arrivals. Ensure you have a local SIM card for data.
Private Transfer: Pre-booked through your hotel or tour operator. A driver will meet you in arrivals with a sign. Highly recommended for first-time visitors, families, or those arriving late at night for a stress-free start.
Rental Car (with Driver): It is very common and affordable to hire a car with a driver for your entire Sri Lanka tour. Most drivers/companies will meet you at the airport. Self-drive rentals are also available but not recommended for unfamiliar visitors due to challenging local driving conditions.

Colombo Ratmalana Airport (RML) – Domestic & Regional

Overview: Ratmalana Airport is a domestic and regional airport located just 15 km (9 miles) south of Colombo city centre. After years of limited service, it has been revitalized to handle domestic flights and limited international services to India and the Maldives, primarily operated by domestic airline Cinnamon Air (seaplanes) and others like FitsAir.

Terminals:

Single, small passenger terminal. Recently renovated, offering basic but adequate facilities.

Getting to and from Ratmalana Airport (RML):

Taxi / PickMe: The most practical option. The journey to Colombo city centre (e.g., Galle Face, Fort) takes 30-60 minutes depending on notorious Colombo traffic.
Bus: Local buses pass the airport entrance, connecting to Colombo and southern suburbs. Not recommended with luggage.

Important: This airport is primarily for specific itineraries: domestic seaplane/air taxi transfers to tourist destinations or direct regional budget flights (e.g., to Chennai, India).

Best for: Travelers on pre-arranged domestic air taxi services (e.g., to Bentota, Kandy by Cinnamon Air), those on specific regional budget flights, or private aviation.

Which Colombo Airport Should You Choose?

This is a critical decision based on your itinerary:

You MUST use Bandaranaike (CMB) if: You are flying from outside Sri Lanka (except specific regional flights noted below), flying SriLankan Airlines, or your ticket says “CMB”.
You might use Ratmalana (RML) if: You are arriving from certain Indian cities (like Chennai) on a budget carrier, or you have booked a domestic air taxi/seaplane transfer from Colombo to a resort. These are niche, pre-arranged services.

Golden Rule: For 95% of international travelers, your airport will be Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). Always double-check your airport code. Confusing CMB with RML could strand you on the wrong side of the city.

Key Tips for Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB)

Arrival Process:

Visa (ETA): Most travelers need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) obtained online before arrival. Have the approval printout or digital copy ready for immigration.
Immigration: Queues can be long, especially during European winter season (Dec-Mar). Have your passport, ETA, and return ticket details ready.
Money & SIMs: The best place to get local currency (Sri Lankan Rupees – LKR) and a SIM card is inside the arrivals hall, before you exit. Multiple bank ATMs and Dialog/Mobitel/Hutch kiosks are present. Getting a SIM with data here is cheap and highly recommended for navigation and ride-hailing.

Ground Transport from CMB to Key Destinations

To Colombo City (Fort, Galle Face, Cinnamon Gardens):

Pre-paid Taxi: 60-90 minutes, LKR 6,000-8,000. Most reliable for a direct trip.
Airport Express Bus (187-E3): 60-90 minutes, LKR 400-500. Best budget option.
Train: ~45 minutes, LKR 200-500. Fastest by rail, but requires a tuktuk to the airport train station.

To Negombo (Beach Town close to the airport):
