Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC)
Overview: Formerly known as Zia International Airport, Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC) is the primary and busiest international airport in Bangladesh. Located in Kurmitola, approximately 17 km (11 miles) north of downtown Dhaka, it serves as the main hub for Biman Bangladesh Airlines and US-Bangla Airlines, and is a focus city for many other regional carriers.
Terminals: The airport has two main passenger terminals and a dedicated Hajj terminal.
- Terminal 1 (International Terminal): Handles all scheduled international arrivals and departures. It is a multi-level building where check-in is on the ground floor and departures are on the first floor. It can become extremely crowded.
- Terminal 2 (Domestic Terminal): Handles all domestic flights within Bangladesh. It is a separate, smaller building located to the east of the International Terminal.

Ride-hailing (Pathao, Uber):
Pathao (local) and Uber operate in Dhaka. This can be a good option for transparent pricing. The pickup point is in the parking area; you may need data connectivity to coordinate with the driver. -
Hotel & Private Transfers:
Strongly recommended for first-time visitors. Many hotels offer airport pick-up services. Private car services can also be booked online for a stress-free arrival. -
Car Rental (with Driver):
Self-drive rentals are virtually non-existent for tourists. Instead, you can hire a car with a driver for the duration of your stay, often arranged through hotels or tour operators. -
Public Bus:
Public buses (BRT and local services) stop near the airport. They are incredibly cheap but are not recommended for travellers with luggage due to extreme crowding, unfamiliar routes, and lack of space.

There is no commercial choice: all scheduled passenger flights use Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC). Your only internal choice is ensuring you go to the correct terminal (International T1 or Domestic T2) for your flight.

Before You Go:
- Visa: Most nationalities require a visa for Bangladesh. Tourist visas can often be obtained on arrival for eligible countries, but the process at the airport can be slow and bureaucratic. Strongly consider obtaining an e-Visa online before travel.
- Check-in: Arrive at least 3 hours before international flights and 2 hours before domestic flights. Lines for check-in, baggage drop, and especially immigration and security can be very long and move slowly.

- Immigration: Prepare for potentially long queues. Have your passport, completed arrival form, visa, and proof of onward travel/address in Bangladesh ready.
- SIM Cards: It is highly advisable to get a local SIM card (Grameenphone, Robi, Banglalink) immediately in the arrivals hall. You will need a copy of your passport and visa. This is crucial for navigation and communication.
- Baggage & Customs: After collecting luggage, you must pass your baggage through an X-ray scanner before exiting customs. Keep your baggage tags and passport handy.
- Ground Transport: Do not engage with touts. Walk purposefully to the official Pre-Paid Taxi counter inside the hall, pay the fixed fare, get your voucher, and proceed to the designated taxi rank.
Departing:
- Security & Process: The departure process involves multiple steps: initial baggage X-ray at the terminal entrance, check-in, emigration (passport control), and then a final security check at the gate. Each stage can have long lines.
- Facilities: The international departures area has duty-free shops, cafes, and lounges (some accessible via priority passes). Free WiFi is available but may require a local phone number for registration.
- Domestic Departures: The process at Terminal 2 is generally simpler but can also be crowded.
Travel Tips for Dhaka
Traffic: Dhaka has some of the world’s worst traffic congestion. A 17 km journey from the airport to the city can take anywhere from 45 minutes to over 2 hours. Always leave for the airport with a massive buffer—at least 4 hours before an international flight departure from your hotel.
Crowds and Patience: The airport and the city are intensely crowded. Service can be slow, and queues are the norm. Patience and a calm demeanor are essential travel tools.
Domestic & International Transfer: If arriving internationally and connecting to a domestic flight on a separate ticket, you must clear immigration, collect bags, clear customs, take a taxi to Terminal 2, check in, and clear security. Allow a minimum of 4-5 hours between flights.
Health & Hygiene: Consider wearing a mask due to dense crowds. Use hand sanitizer frequently. Drink only bottled water.
Cultural Sensitivity: Dress modestly. Be prepared for attention as a foreign visitor, but also for immense hospitality.
