Unlike cities with multiple airports serving one metropolitan area, Jamaica’s airports are strategically located along the island’s north and south coasts to serve different resort regions and the capital city.

Knowing which Jamaican airport you’re flying into is critical for planning your vacation logistics, as the island’s mountainous terrain and coastal roads mean significant travel times between regions. This guide explains every airport serving Jamaica, including IATA codes, terminal layouts, and clear explanations of how to get to your final resort or destination.

Sangster International Airport (MBJ) – Montego Bay

Overview: Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay is Jamaica’s busiest airport and the primary gateway for tourists. Located on the island’s north coast in St. James Parish, approximately 5 km (3 miles) east of Montego Bay’s city center, it handles the vast majority of international charter and scheduled flights from North America and Europe.

Terminals:

Main Terminal Complex: A recently expanded single-terminal building with separate concourses for arrivals and departures.
Arrivals Hall: Features immigration, customs, baggage claim, and the famous “Jamaica Experience” area with vendors, information desks, and transportation services.
Departures Hall: Check-in counters, security, duty-free shopping, and dining options.

Getting to and from MBJ Airport:

Pre-Booked Resort Transfers:
The most common and recommended option for tourists. Most all-inclusive resorts offer shuttle services included in packages or available for additional fee. Representatives meet you in the arrivals hall.
JUTA Taxis (Official Airport Taxis):
The only taxis permitted to pick up passengers inside the airport perimeter. Fixed-rate fares to various zones. Purchase vouchers at the JUTA desk in arrivals. Reliable and regulated.
Private Transfers:
Numerous companies offer private car or van services booked in advance. More expensive but offers door-to-door convenience with pre-set pricing.
Rental Cars:
All major international rental companies have desks in the arrivals hall. Driving is on the left side of the road. Note that some resorts restrict rental cars or charge parking fees.
Route Taxis (Local Shared Taxis):
For budget travelers headed to Montego Bay proper. Not allowed at airport; walk to main road for these informal shared minivans. Not recommended for tourists with luggage or first-time visitors.

Best for: Tourists staying in north coast resorts including Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios, Runaway Bay, Falmouth, and Discovery Bay. Most all-inclusive package vacations arrive here.

Norman Manley International Airport (KIN) – Kingston

Overview: Norman Manley International Airport (KIN) serves Jamaica’s capital city of Kingston, located on a narrow peninsula about 19 km (12 miles) southeast of downtown Kingston. It handles international flights from North America, the Caribbean, and limited European routes, plus extensive domestic and Caribbean regional traffic.

Terminals:

Terminal Building: A single terminal with separate areas for international and domestic/regional operations.
Recent upgrades: The airport has undergone significant renovation and expansion in recent years.

Getting to and from KIN Airport:

Official Airport Taxis:
Licensed red-plate taxis operate on fixed fares to Kingston zones. Purchase vouchers at the taxi desk in arrivals. Insist on using the official system to avoid scams.
Hotel Shuttles:
Many Kingston hotels offer airport pickup services, particularly business-oriented properties.
Rental Cars:
Available from major companies in the arrivals area.
Private Transfers:
Pre-booked car services available.
Public Buses:
JUTC buses serve the airport but are not practical for travelers with luggage.

Best for: Business travelers, visitors to Kingston, those visiting the Blue Mountains or south coast, and travelers connecting to other Caribbean islands. Also used by some tourists headed to Portland Parish or the south coast.

Ian Fleming International Airport (OCJ) – Ocho Rios

Overview: Ian Fleming International Airport (OCJ), formerly Boscobel Aerodrome, is a small international airport located near Ocho Rios in St. Mary Parish. It primarily handles private aviation, charters, and limited scheduled flights from other Caribbean islands.

Terminals:

Small terminal building: Basic facilities with limited services.

Best for: Private aircraft, high-end tourists staying in luxury villas in Ocho Rios/St. Mary area, and inter-Caribbean travel.

Domestic Airports and Airstrips

Tinson Pen Aerodrome (KTP): In Kingston, used primarily for domestic flights, flight training, and private aviation.

Negril Aerodrome: Small airstrip serving Negril with occasional domestic flights and charters.

Ken Jones Aerodrome (KJY): In Portland, serves the east end of the island.

Brimmer Hall Airstrip: Near Port Maria, primarily for private aviation.

Which Jamaican Airport Should You Choose?

Your choice depends entirely on where you’re staying:

Choose Montego Bay (MBJ) if: You’re staying at resorts in Montego Bay, Negril (90-120 minute transfer), Ocho Rios (90-120 minutes), Falmouth (30-45 minutes), Runaway Bay, or Discovery Bay. This covers about 80% of tourists.

Choose Kingston (KIN) if: You’re visiting Kingston for business, staying in the Blue Mountains, visiting Portland or the south coast, or taking a cruise from Kingston port. Some tourists use KIN for transfers to the north coast, but this involves a 3-4 hour drive across the mountains.

Never book flights to different airports for arrival and departure unless you’re planning a cross-island tour with adequate time between.

Ground Transportation Between Regions

Montego Bay to Negril: 90-120 minutes via the A1 (Queen’s Highway). Scenic coastal route.

Montego Bay to Ocho Rios: 90-120 minutes via the A1 (North Coast Highway).

Montego Bay to Kingston: 3-4 hours via the A1 and A3 (via Mandeville) or the more challenging but scenic A3 through the mountains.

Kingston to Ocho Rios: 2-3 hours via the A3 (via Castleton) or A4 (via Annotto Bay).

Domestic Flights: TimAir and other companies offer charter flights between Montego Bay, Kingston, Negril, Ocho Rios, and Port Antonio. Expensive but saves hours of driving.

Essential Airport Information

Immigration and Customs:

Complete your immigration/customs C5 form on the plane.
Have passport and return ticket ready.
Jamaica has agricultural restrictions—declare any food items.

Money: ATMs and currency exchange are available in arrivals. Jamaican dollars (JMD) are local currency, but US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas (often at poor exchange rates).

Tourist Transportation: Only use JUTA taxis at MBJ or official red-plate taxis at KIN. Avoid “independent” drivers soliciting inside terminals.

Departure Tax: Included in your airline ticket price since 2005.

Security: Allow ample time for security screening, which can be thorough. At MBJ, there’s often a second security check at the gate for US-bound flights.

Inter-Airport Travel in Jamaica

Between MBJ and KIN:

By Road: 3-4 hours depending on route and traffic. Not recommended for same-day flight connections.
By Domestic Air: Charter flights available (30 minutes) but expensive. No scheduled service.
Minimum Connection Time: If you must change airports (not recommended), allow at least 8 hours between flights.

Bottom line: For most tourists, Montego Bay’s Sangster International (MBJ) is your arrival point. Pre-book your resort transfer or use official JUTA taxis. For Kingston visits, Norman Manley (KIN) is your airport. Never underestimate Jamaican travel times—mountain roads, coastal routes, and occasional traffic mean journeys often take longer than map distances suggest. Plan your airport and transfers according to your final destination, not by which airport has the cheapest flight.
