Kochi Airports Guide
Kochi Airports Guide: Terminals, Transport, and Essential Information
Kochi (also known as Cochin), a major port city in the Indian state of Kerala, is served by one international airport. This airport is a key gateway to South India, particularly for travelers visiting Kerala’s backwaters, hill stations, and historic sites. Its modern terminal and good connectivity make it a popular entry point.
This guide provides essential information about Cochin International Airport, including terminal details, transportation options, and tips for navigating your arrival in God’s Own Country.
Cochin International Airport (COK)
Overview: Cochin International Airport is the primary airport serving the Kochi metropolitan area and the wider state of Kerala. It is notably the world’s first airport fully powered by solar energy. Located approximately 25 km (15 miles) northeast of the city center (Ernakulam) and about 30 km from the historic Fort Kochi area, it handles a significant number of international flights (especially to the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Europe) and domestic connections.
Terminals:
- Terminal 1 (T1 – International): A modern, spacious terminal handling all international arrivals and departures.
- Terminal 3 (T3 – New International): A brand new, expanded international terminal that became operational in 2023/2024, significantly increasing capacity. It is connected to the existing terminal complex.
Terminal 2 (T2 – Domestic): Handles all domestic flights. It is integrated with T1; both terminals are under one large roof and connected via a central area.
The terminals are well-signed. Transferring between domestic and international areas is straightforward within the building.
Getting to and from Cochin Airport (COK):
-
Pre-Paid Taxi (Highly Recommended):
The most reliable and hassle-free option for visitors. Upon exiting baggage claim, look for the official “Pre-Paid Taxi” counter. You state your destination (e.g., Ernakulam, Fort Kochi, Alappuzha), pay a fixed fare, and receive a receipt. You then present the receipt to a driver at the designated taxi rank outside. This eliminates negotiation and overcharging. Fares are displayed. -
App-Based Cab (Ola, Uber):
Ola and Uber operate reliably in Kochi. Designated pick-up points are at the airport. You may need an Indian SIM card with data to book. Often cheaper than pre-paid taxis, but ensure you are at the correct pick-up zone. -
Airport Buses (KSRTC – “Low Floor” AC Buses):
A very economical and comfortable option. Orange-colored, air-conditioned buses run frequently from the airport to major hubs:- To Ernakulam City (Vyttila Mobility Hub, JLN Stadium): Takes about 60-90 minutes depending on traffic.
- To Fort Kochi: Connects via Ernakulam.
- To Alappuzha (Alleppey) for backwaters: Direct buses available, journey ~2 hours.
Bus stops are located just outside the arrivals area. Pay in cash to the conductor.
-
Car Rental (with Driver):
Many local companies offer cars with drivers for day trips or longer tours (e.g., to Munnar or Thekkady). Counters are available in the arrivals hall. Self-drive rentals are less common. -
Train:
There is no direct train station at the airport. The nearest major railway stations are in Ernakulam (South, North, and Town). To reach them, you must first take a taxi or bus from the airport.
Best for: All international and domestic travelers to Kochi and central Kerala. It is the busiest airport in Kerala.
Essential Travel Information for Cochin Airport (COK)
Visa:
Most foreign nationals require a visa to enter India. An e-Visa, applied for online before travel, is the most convenient option for tourism. Ensure you have a printed copy of your e-Visa approval. Check current eligibility and rules on the official Indian government website.
Currency:
The Indian Rupee (INR). ATMs and currency exchange counters (like Thomas Cook) are available in the international arrivals hall. It’s advisable to have some rupees for your initial transport. Foreign credit/debit cards are widely accepted, but having cash is useful for smaller vendors and taxis.
SIM Cards:
Purchasing a local Indian SIM card at the airport is highly recommended for data and calls. Providers like Airtel, Jio, and Vi have kiosks in the arrivals hall. You will need your passport, visa, and a passport-sized photo (some providers take a digital photo). The process can take 15-30 minutes for activation.
Arrival Process:
For international arrivals:
- Fill out a disembarkation card (sometimes provided on the plane).
- Proceed to immigration (lines can be long). Have passport, visa, and arrival card ready.
- Collect baggage.
- Proceed through customs (green channel for nothing to declare).
The airport can be busy, especially when multiple international flights arrive simultaneously.
Domestic Connections:
If arriving internationally and connecting to a domestic flight, you must clear immigration, collect baggage, clear customs, and then proceed to the domestic check-in counters (in T2). Allow at least 2.5 – 3 hours between flights.
Departure Tip:
For international departures, arrive at the airport at least 3 hours early. Check-in, security, and immigration lines can be lengthy. The airport has good shopping for spices, tea, and handicrafts after security. For domestic flights, 2 hours is sufficient.
Ground Transport to Key Destinations
To Ernakulam (city center, commercial hub): Pre-paid taxi (45-75 mins, ~INR 800-1000) or KSRTC AC bus (60-90 mins, ~INR 100-150).
To Fort Kochi (historic area, Chinese fishing nets): Pre-paid taxi (60-90 mins, ~INR 1000-1200) is most direct. Bus requires a change in Ernakulam.
To Alappuzha (Alleppey – for backwaters/houseboats): Direct KSRTC AC bus is a great option (~2 hours, INR 200-250). A pre-paid taxi costs ~INR 2500-3000 and takes similar time.
To Munnar (hill station): A pre-booked taxi or car with driver is necessary (approx. 4-hour drive, 130 km). Cost INR 4000-5000+.
To Thekkady (Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary): Also requires a hired car/taxi (approx. 4-5 hour drive, 140 km).
To Marari Beach: Taxi or bus to Alappuzha, then a short local transfer.
Which Airport Should You Use?
For all travel to Kochi and central Kerala, you will use Cochin International Airport (COK). It is the primary and most convenient airport for the region.
Other Kerala Airports: Travelers heading to the far north of Kerala (e.g., Kannur) may use Kannur International Airport (CNN). Those going to the southern tip (e.g., Trivandrum for Kovalam) may use Trivandrum International Airport (TRV). However, COK remains the most centrally located for exploring the classic Kerala circuit.
Bottom Line: Cochin International Airport is modern and well-organized. Upon arrival, head to the official pre-paid taxi counter or the KSRTC AC bus stand for reliable, fixed-fare transport. Get a local SIM card at the airport for connectivity. The airport’s efficiency and solar-powered status make for a positive welcome to the lush and vibrant state of Kerala.
