Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS) – International Terminal

Overview: Murtala Muhammed International Airport (IATA: LOS), often simply called “Ikeja Airport” or “MMIA,” is Nigeria’s primary international gateway. Located in Ikeja, approximately 22 km (14 miles) northwest of Lagos Island’s business district, it handles the vast majority of long-haul international flights and is a major hub for Air Peace, Nigeria’s largest carrier.

Terminals (within the LOS complex):

International Terminal (MMIA): The main building handling all flights to and from destinations outside Nigeria. It is an older facility that can be crowded and chaotic, though ongoing renovations aim to improve conditions.
Domestic Terminal (General Aviation Terminal – GAT): Located within the same airport complex but in a separate building. This terminal handles domestic flights operated by airlines like Arik Air, Air Peace, United Nigeria, and others. It is often extremely busy.
Note: The LOS complex is large and sprawling. Moving between the International and Domestic terminals requires exiting one terminal and driving to the other—they are not connected airside.

Getting to and from LOS International Terminal:

Official Airport Taxis:
The most common option. Upon exiting the arrivals hall, you will find official taxi operators. Negotiate and agree on a firm fare before entering any vehicle. Fares are not metered. Expect to pay between ₦8,000 – ₦15,000 to Victoria Island/Ikoyi, and ₦6,000 – ₦10,000 to mainland areas like Ikeja, depending on traffic and your negotiation skills. Use only official operators from inside the terminal.
Hotel Shuttles/Private Transfers:
Many hotels offer airport pickup. Pre-booking a private transfer through a reputable company or your hotel is highly recommended for first-time visitors and provides the least stressful arrival.
Ride-Hailing (Uber/Bolt):
Available but the pickup process can be confusing. Drivers often call to confirm location. Agree on the pickup point (specific car park) via the app. Can be cheaper than official taxis but subject to surge pricing.
Car Rental:
Major international companies have desks in arrivals. Self-driving in Lagos is not recommended for visitors due to chaotic traffic and unique driving norms.
Public Buses:
Not a practical or recommended option for arriving international travelers with luggage.

Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 (MMA2)

Overview: Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 (commonly called MMA2) is a modern, privately-operated terminal located directly opposite the main LOS international airport complex. It was built to handle domestic and regional flights, primarily serving Aero Contractors, Air Peace (for some domestic routes), Dana Air, and Overland Airways. It offers a significantly more organized and comfortable passenger experience than the older domestic terminal (GAT).

Terminal:

Single Passenger Terminal: A modern, clean, and efficient building with clear signage, decent amenities, shops, and food outlets. It handles both departures and arrivals for its airlines.
Important Distinction: MMA2 is a separate facility from the main LOS terminals. If your domestic flight arrives at MMA2 but you have an international connection from the main LOS International Terminal, you must collect your bags, exit MMA2, and travel across the airport road (a short drive) to the other terminal, requiring you to re-check-in and clear security. This is not a sterile connection.

Getting to and from MMA2: Transport options are similar to LOS (taxis, ride-hailing, private transfers). The location is essentially the same area, so fares and travel times to city destinations are comparable.

Best for: Domestic travelers on airlines operating from MMA2, offering a smoother experience than the GAT. Also used for some regional flights to West African destinations.

Which Lagos Airport/Terminal Should You Use?

For International Arrivals/Departures: You will almost certainly use the main Murtala Muhammed International Terminal (LOS).

For Domestic Flights: Check your airline:

Murtala Muhammed Domestic Terminal (GAT): Arik Air, Air Peace (many flights), United Nigeria, Green Africa, others.
MMA2: Aero Contractors, Dana Air, Overland Airways, Air Peace (some flights).

To Victoria Island (VI) / Ikoyi: 45 minutes to 2.5+ hours. Fare: ₦10,000 – ₦20,000+.
To Lagos Island (Marina): 40 minutes to 2+ hours. Fare: ₦9,000 – ₦18,000.
To Ikeja (closest major district): 15 to 60 minutes. Fare: ₦4,000 – ₦8,000.
