Mombasa, Kenya’s major coastal city and a premier tourist destination, is served by one main international airport that connects it to domestic hubs, regional neighbors, and international charter flights. A smaller airstrip also serves specific niche markets. This guide explains both airports and provides clear information for reaching the beach resorts of the North and South Coasts.

Moi International Airport (MBA)

Overview: Moi International Airport (IATA: MBA) is the primary airport serving Mombasa and the Kenyan coast. Located approximately 9 km (5.6 miles) west of Mombasa Island’s city center, it handles scheduled international flights (mainly from the Middle East and neighboring African countries), domestic flights from Nairobi and other cities, and a significant volume of European charter traffic during peak tourist season.

Terminals:

• Single Passenger Terminal: The airport has one main terminal building that handles both international and domestic arrivals and departures. The facilities are functional but can feel crowded during peak arrival times. It houses check-in counters, baggage claim, a few small shops and cafes, forex bureaus, and car rental desks.

Getting to and from Moi International Airport (MBA):

• Pre-Booked Hotel Transfer / Taxi:
  This is the most common and recommended method for tourists. The vast majority of hotels and beach resorts include or offer private transfer services. Upon exiting customs, you will find a hall with representatives from various hotels and tour operators holding signs. If you have pre-booked, locate your driver.

  Official Airport Taxis: If you haven’t pre-booked, taxis are available outside the terminal. Ukunda Airstrip (UKA) – Diani Airport

Overview: Ukunda Airstrip (IATA: UKA), often called Diani Airport, is a small, simple airstrip located directly on the South Coast, near Diani Beach. It handles domestic flights from Nairobi (Wilson Airport) and other parks via small aircraft operated by SafariLink, Airkenya, and others. It is a huge time-saver for tourists staying in Diani, avoiding the need to fly into Mombasa and then cross the busy Likoni ferry.

Terminals:

• Basic Terminal Building: A very simple, open-air style building with a waiting area and basic check-in desk. There are no jet bridges; you walk to and from the aircraft.

Getting to and from Ukunda Airstrip (UKA):

• Resort Transfer / Taxi:
  Most South Coast resorts will arrange a transfer for guests arriving at UKA, as it is only a 10-30 minute drive to most hotels in Diani, Galu, and Msambweni. Taxis are also readily available outside the airstrip for negotiation.

Best for: Tourists whose final destination is Diani Beach or the South Coast, especially those on a combined safari and beach holiday flying directly from the Masai Mara or Amboseli.

Which Airport Should You Choose for Mombasa?

The choice depends on your final coastal destination and flight itinerary:

• Choose Moi International Airport (MBA) if: You are flying internationally directly to the coast, arriving from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International (JKIA) on a larger domestic flight (Kenya Airways, Jambojet), or are staying on the North Coast (Nyali, Bamburi, Shanzu) or in Mombasa city.
• Choose Ukunda Airstrip (UKA) if: You are staying on the South Coast (Diani Beach) and are flying on a small domestic aircraft from a Kenyan national park or from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport (WIL). This is the premium choice for convenience when going to Diani.

Getting to Key Coastal Areas from Moi International Airport (MBA)

Travel times can vary wildly due to Mombasa’s infamous traffic and, for the South Coast, ferry delays.

• To Mombasa Island & City Center:
  The closest destination. The drive takes 20-40 minutes depending on traffic on the busy Mombasa-Nairobi Highway (A109).
• To North Coast Resorts (Nyali, Bamburi, Shanzu, Kikambala):
