Nagoya Airports Guide
Nagoya Airports Guide: Terminals, Transport, and Essential Information
Nagoya, Japan’s fourth-largest metropolis and a major industrial hub, is served by two primary airports: an international airport built on an artificial island and a domestic airport closer to the city center. Each serves distinct roles, with clear separations between international and domestic traffic. This guide explains both airports and their connections to the city.
Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO)
Overview: Chubu Centrair International Airport (IATA: NGO) is the main international gateway for the Nagoya region and central Japan. Built on an artificial island in Ise Bay, it is located about 35 km (22 miles) south of Nagoya Station. The airport is renowned for its efficiency, cleanliness, and the “Sky Town” shopping and onsen (hot spring) facility attached to the terminal.
Terminals:
- Single Passenger Terminal: A large, single-terminal building with two piers. The terminal is designed for easy navigation. The first floor is for arrivals, the second for departures, and the fourth floor houses the “Sky Deck” and the “Flight of Dreams” exhibit featuring a Boeing 787. All international and some domestic flights (operated by ANA and JAL) use this terminal.
Getting to and from Centrair Airport (NGO):
-
Meitetsu Airport Line (μSky Limited Express):
The fastest and most convenient rail link. The μSky limited express train runs directly from the airport station (located in the terminal basement) to Nagoya Station in 28 minutes. Trains are frequent, comfortable, and offer reserved seating. This is the recommended option for most travelers. -
Meitetsu Airport Line (Rapid Express / Regular Trains):
Slower but cheaper options that also go to Nagoya Station. The Rapid Express takes about 45 minutes. These trains are non-reserved and can be crowded during peak hours. -
Airport Limousine Bus:
Direct buses connect the airport to major destinations like Nagoya Station, Meitetsu Bus Center, and major hotels in the city. The journey to Nagoya Station takes about 55-85 minutes, depending on traffic. A good option if your hotel is near a bus stop. -
Taxi:
Available but very expensive for the long distance to central Nagoya (can exceed 20,000 JPY / ~$130 USD). Not recommended. -
Ferry (to Toba & Ise):
For travelers heading directly to the Ise-Shima region, a high-speed ferry connects Centrair to Toba City.
Best for: All international travelers and domestic travelers on ANA or JAL connecting to/from international flights.
Nagoya Airfield (NKM) – Komaki Airport
Overview: Nagoya Airfield (IATA: NKM), often called Komaki Airport, is the older, domestic airport located much closer to the city, about 10 km (6 miles) north of Nagoya Station. It now primarily handles domestic flights for low-cost carriers (LCCs) like Jetstar Japan, Spring Airlines Japan, and Fuji Dream Airlines, as well as general aviation.
Terminals:
- Single Passenger Terminal: A small, functional terminal with basic facilities. It is easy to navigate but lacks the extensive amenities of Centrair.
Getting to and from Komaki Airport (NKM):
-
Meitetsu Bus:
The most common public transport. Buses run regularly from the airport to Meitetsu Bus Center (located next to Nagoya Station) in about 30 minutes, depending on traffic. -
Taxi:
A reasonable option given the short distance. A trip to Nagoya Station takes 25-40 minutes and costs approximately 4,000-6,000 JPY.
Best for: Domestic travelers on low-cost carriers flying to/from other Japanese cities like Sapporo, Fukuoka, or Okinawa.
Which Airport Should You Choose for Nagoya?
The choice is dictated by your flight type and airline.
- Choose Chubu Centrair (NGO) if: You are flying internationally, or flying domestically on a full-service carrier (ANA, JAL) in connection with an international flight. It is the primary airport for the region.
- Choose Nagoya Airfield / Komaki (NKM) if: You are flying domestically on a low-cost carrier (Jetstar, Spring Airlines Japan, Fuji Dream Airlines) between Nagoya and another Japanese city.
Always double-check your airport code (NGO vs. NKM) when booking domestic flights in Japan. A mix-up could send you to the wrong side of the city.
Airport Transfers Between NGO and NKM
The two airports are about 50 km (31 miles) apart. There is no direct public transport link.
Is it feasible to connect between NGO and NKM?
It is possible but requires careful planning and time. You would need to take the Meitetsu μSky train from Centrair to Nagoya Station (28 mins), then transfer to a Meitetsu bus from the Meitetsu Bus Center to Komaki Airport (30 mins). Total travel time is at least 90 minutes, not including waiting time.
Allow an absolute minimum of 4 hours between flights for a stress-free transfer on separate tickets.
Key Tips for Nagoya Airports
- IC Cards: For public transport, purchase or use a rechargeable IC card like TOICA or Suica. They work on the Meitetsu trains, buses, and subways, making transfers seamless.
- Centrair Amenities: Arrive early or have a long layover at Centrair? Visit the “Flight of Dreams” exhibit (free), relax at the Sky Deck observation area, or even take a dip in the “Fu no Yu” onsen (bathhouse) on the fourth floor.
- Luggage Forwarding: Japan’s takkyubin (luggage delivery) service is excellent. You can send your luggage directly from Centrair Airport to your hotel in Nagoya or another city. Counters are in the arrivals hall.
- Buying the μSky Ticket: At Centrair, you can buy μSky tickets from machines or the ticket counter. For the limited express, you need both a base fare ticket and a limited express surcharge ticket. The IC card covers the base fare, but you must purchase a separate surcharge ticket from a machine before boarding.
Bottom line: For international travel, you will use the excellent Chubu Centrair Airport (NGO). Take the Meitetsu μSky limited express train for a quick, comfortable ride to Nagoya Station. For domestic LCC flights, you may use Komaki Airport (NKM); take the direct bus to the city center. Always confirm your airport code before travel.
