Tunis Airports Guide
Tunis Airports Guide: Terminals, Transport, and Essential Information
Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, is primarily served by one international airport located near the coastal suburb of Carthage. This airport acts as the main gateway for tourists visiting Tunisia’s Mediterranean coast, historic sites, and the capital city. A smaller airport in the city center handles domestic and some regional flights.
This guide explains the airports serving Tunis, including terminal details, transport options, and key information for a smooth arrival in North Africa.
Tunis–Carthage International Airport (TUN)
Overview: Tunis–Carthage International Airport is the primary international gateway to Tunisia, located approximately 8 km (5 miles) northeast of central Tunis, near the ancient ruins of Carthage and the coastal town of Sidi Bou Said. It is the main hub for Tunisair and Nouvelair, handling the majority of international flights from Europe, the Middle East, and other African countries.
Terminals:
- Terminal 1: The older terminal, primarily used for charter flights and some low-cost carriers.
- Terminal 2 (Main Terminal): A modern terminal handling all scheduled international flights for full-service and many other airlines. This is where most travelers will arrive and depart.
The terminals are close together and connected landside. Always confirm your terminal with your airline, but most international scheduled flights use T2.
Getting to and from Tunis–Carthage Airport (TUN):
-
Official Airport Taxi (Taxi Blanc):
The most common option. Official white taxis with meters are available outside the arrivals hall. Ensure the meter is turned on at the start of your journey. The fare to central Tunis (e.g., Avenue Habib Bourguiba) should be around 8-12 Tunisian Dinars (TND), plus a small airport surcharge (approx. 0.5 TND) and a small fee per bag. The journey takes 20-40 minutes depending on traffic. Agree on the use of the meter before getting in. -
Pre-Booked Private Transfer:
Many hotels and tour operators offer this service. A driver will meet you in arrivals with a sign. This is a reliable, stress-free option, especially for first-time visitors. -
TGM Light Rail + Tunis Metro:
The most economical public transport option. From the airport, take a short taxi (or a 15-minute walk) to the TGM station “Le Kram.” Take the TGM west to “Tunis Marine” station, where you can connect to the Tunis Metro (Line 4) to reach the city center. This is best for travelers with light luggage and some local navigation confidence. -
Car Rental:
Major international and local rental companies have desks in the arrivals hall of Terminal 2. Driving in central Tunis is chaotic for visitors; a car is best for exploring the countryside after leaving the city. -
Bus:
Public bus services from the airport are limited and not recommended for tourists with luggage.
Best for: All international travelers to Tunis and northern Tunisia. This is the main airport for the country.
Tunis–El Aouina Air Base
Overview: This is a military airbase co-located with the commercial airport. It does not handle civilian passenger traffic.
Tunis–Séjoumi Airfield
Overview: A small airfield in the southern suburbs used for general aviation and flight training. Not used for commercial flights.
Essential Travel Information for Tunis–Carthage Airport (TUN)
Visa & Immigration:
Many nationalities (including EU, UK, US, Canada) do not require a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay. Immigration lines can be slow; have your passport and return ticket details ready.
Currency:
The Tunisian Dinar (TND). It is illegal to import or export Tunisian Dinars. You must exchange money upon arrival. ATMs and currency exchange bureaus (Banque de Tunisie, etc.) are available in the arrivals hall. Exchange enough for initial expenses; rates are better in the city. Euros and US Dollars are sometimes accepted but at poor rates.
Language:
Arabic is the official language, French is widely used. English is understood in tourist areas and by airport staff, but not universally.
Airport “Helpers”:
Be prepared for individuals offering to “help” with luggage or find a taxi. A firm “Non, merci” (No, thank you) is usually sufficient. Walk directly to the official taxi rank.
Departure Tip:
For international departures, arrive at T2 at least 3 hours early. Security and check-in lines can be long and disorganized. There are multiple security checks. The duty-free shopping after security is decent, with local products like dates, olive oil, and perfumes.
Proximity to Attractions:
The airport is very close to the ruins of Carthage and the beautiful blue-and-white village of Sidi Bou Said. If you have a long layover, these are easily accessible by taxi.
Ground Transport to Key Destinations
To Central Tunis (Avenue Habib Bourguiba, Medina): Official white taxi (20-40 mins, 8-12 TND).
To Northern Suburbs (La Marsa, Gammarth): Taxi is best (15-30 mins, 7-10 TND).
To Sidi Bou Said: A short and scenic taxi ride (10-15 mins, 5-8 TND).
To Carthage Ruins: Very close by taxi (5-10 mins, 4-6 TND).
To Resort Towns (Hammamet, Nabeul): A pre-arranged private transfer or taxi is required. The drive to Hammamet takes about 1 hour (cost approx. 80-120 TND). Louages (shared long-distance taxis) are a cheaper, adventurous alternative but depart from stations in the city, not the airport.
To Tunis Cruise Port (La Goulette): A taxi takes about 20 minutes (10-15 TND).
Which Airport Should You Use?
For all international and most domestic travel to Tunis, you will use Tunis–Carthage International Airport (TUN). The other airfields in Tunis are military or general aviation only.
Domestic Travel Note: For travel within Tunisia (e.g., to Djerba or Tozeur), you will typically take a domestic flight from Terminal 1 or 2 at Tunis-Carthage (TUN). There is no separate domestic-only airport in Tunis.
Bottom Line: You will arrive at Tunis–Carthage Airport (TUN), Terminal 2. Use an official white taxi (insist on the meter) or a pre-arranged transfer for the most reliable trip to your hotel. While the airport can feel busy, it is manageable. Have some Tunisian Dinars on hand for your taxi, and enjoy the start of your Tunisian adventure.
