Yangon, the largest city and former capital of Myanmar, is served by one main international airport. This airport is the primary gateway for most travelers entering the country and has undergone significant upgrades in recent years. A smaller, older airport handles domestic flights to a few destinations.

Yangon International Airport (RGN)

Overview: Yangon International Airport is the main and busiest airport in Myanmar, located approximately 15 km (9 miles) north of downtown Yangon. It consists of two international terminals and is the primary hub for Myanmar’s national carrier, Myanmar National Airlines, as well as a base for many international airlines.

Terminals:

• Terminal 1 (T1 – International): The older international terminal, still used by some airlines including China Eastern, Thai AirAsia, and others. It is a more basic facility.
• Terminal 2 (T2 – International): A newer, modern terminal opened in 2016. It handles the majority of international flights, including those from Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, Qatar Airways, and many others. This is where most travelers will arrive.
• Domestic Terminal: A separate, older building located between T1 and T2, used for all domestic flights within Myanmar.

To areas further south like Dala or the Twante ferry, expect $12-$15.

Yangon Aerodrome (Old Mingaladon Airport)

Overview: This is the original, historic airport located adjacent to the modern international terminals. It is now used exclusively for military aviation and does not handle any commercial passenger flights. Travelers will not use this facility.

Essential Travel Information for Yangon Airport (RGN)

Visa:
Most travelers require a visa to enter Myanmar. An e-Visa, applied for online in advance, is the most common and recommended method. Have a printed copy of your e-Visa approval letter ready for immigration. Visa on Arrival is available for some nationalities but pre-arranged e-Visas are smoother.

Currency:
The local currency is the Myanmar Kyat (MMK). It is illegal to bring large amounts of Kyat into or out of the country. Which Airport Should You Use?
