Passenger tried to open door during American Airlines flight.

An American Airlines flight from Chicago to Dallas was diverted to St. Louis, after a passenger reportedly tried to open the door mid-flight.

According to reports, soon after flight AA2300 took off from O’Hare International Airport on Tuesday, a male passenger became unruly and attempted to open the emergency door.

Witnesses say the unnamed man was restrained as the captain diverted the plane to St. Louis.

Upon landing at St. Louis Lambert International Airport, the man was led out in handcuffs by police officers.

“An American flight from O’Hare made an emergency landing in St. Louis tonight because of an unruly passenger,” AA spokesperson, Gianna Urgo said.

Despite the man’s efforts, the actual risk of a plane door being opened at cruising altitude is zero, as the pressurised cabin results in about three tons of pressure holding the door in place.

Flight AA2300 was rerouted to Dallas from St. Louis later in the evening.
