An Air India flight was forced to return back to Mumbai after passengers spotted a rat on board.
The flight, which was destined for London, was flying over Iran when the incident occurred. The pilot decided to return back to Mumbai as a precautionary measure, as rodents pose both a serious health and technical hazard. Rodent sightings are always taken seriously in aviation, as they can chew through wires and damage equipment. An Air India official announced that the aircraft will be fumigated and inspected thoroughly before returning to service.
This is one of many unfortunate incidents for the airline in the past few weeks. On the same day, a stray dog found its way onto the runway at Sri Guru Ram Das Jee
International Airport in Northern India as an aircraft was taxiing. The Air India pilot was forced to apply the emergency brakes and return to its parking bay. After a brief inspection, the aircraft took off for London.
Two weeks ago in Mumbai, an Air India technician was sucked into an aircraft engine and killed.
