Air New Zealand has unveiled a new economy class sleeping pod.
Air New Zealand has revealed details of a new economy lie-flat seat, dubbed the Economy Skynest.
The new feature will contain six full-length pods at 200cm long and 58cm wide, with three levels of beds and two beds on each level.
“A clear pain point for economy travelers on long-haul flights is the inability to stretch out,” says Air New Zealand chief marketing and customer officer Mike Tod.
“The development of the Economy Skynest is a direct response to that challenge.”
The exact location within the aircraft and the price is yet to be confirmed.
Some experts have warned that pricing will be a challenge, as Air New Zealand would need to be careful to avoid undermining the business class cabin.
High-paying business class passengers make up a significant part of airlines’ revenue.
It is also unclear whether economy class passengers would have to book a pod for the entire flight or just a particular time slot.
The Economy Skynest is expected to launch in a year’s time.
