Airports around the world have started screening passengers.

Airports around the world are increasing health screenings as officials race to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

The new virus that appeared in Wuhan, China last month, has claimed nine lives and infected hundreds.

The Chinese government have said the virus originated from a seafood market that “conducted illegal transactions of wild animals”.

Authorities have urged people to stop travelling in and out of Wuhan, however, it may be too late as the Chinese New Year is only days away.

The largest annual human migration in the world has already begun with the Chinese expected to make 3 billion trips over the next month.

There is evidence that the disease is “mainly transmitted through the respiratory tract,” according to National Health Commission vice-minister, Li Bin.

This means coughs and sneezes are effective ways the virus can spread.

On Tuesday, the United States confirmed its first case of the coronavirus when a 30-year-old Seattle resident arrived home from Wuhan.

2019-nCoV is understood to be part of the same family as the SARS virus that killed nearly 800 people globally in early 2000.

Although there is currently no specific treatment for coronaviruses, symptoms of each virus can be treated.
