An American Airlines flight attendant was bitten by an emotional support dog on a flight from Dallas to North Carolina.

An emotional support dog bit an American Airlines cabin crew member, resulting in an injury that required five stitches.

Monday’s incident occurred on flight AA3506 from Dallas to Greensboro, North Carolina, however, it is unclear when the flight attendant was bitten by the canine during the trip.

The unnamed male required five stitches on his left hand.

The breed of dog was not disclosed.

The Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) is now calling for the US Department of Transportation to review the policies for air travel with with emotional support animals.

“What happened on yesterday’s American Airlines flight is completely unacceptable and inexcusable,” the AFA said in a statement.

“For years, AFA has supported the role trained animals can provide to passengers in the cabin, but we have also called for action in regards to setting standards for emotional support animals.”

Last year, American Airlines unveiled new rules for travelling with emotional support animals, banning amphibians, insects, rodents and goats.
