British Airways gives its A380 cabins a major makeover.
British Airways has unveiled a major overhaul of its Airbus A380 fleet, with passengers set to see completely redesigned interiors across all four cabins as the refurbished aircraft gradually return to service.
The extensive upgrade forms part of a multi-million-pound investment in the airline’s onboard product. Rather than concentrating on one section of the aircraft, British Airways is introducing changes throughout the A380, including new seating, entertainment systems and refreshed communal areas.
Every cabin will receive new seats as part of the refurbishment, while passengers will also have access to upgraded in-flight entertainment screens. British Airways is additionally redesigning areas such as the galleys and staircases in an effort to give the double-decker aircraft a more contemporary appearance.
One of the biggest changes will be found in Business Class. The upper deck will become home to 106 Club Suite seats, creating what British Airways says will be the largest Business Class cabin in the world.
The Club Suite product will occupy the entire upper floor of the aircraft and will also feature updated finishes and detailing. The move represents a substantial expansion of the airline’s modern Business Class product aboard the A380 and will dramatically change the layout of the upper deck.
First Class is also receiving considerable attention. British Airways is introducing its new First suite as the centrepiece of the refreshed premium experience, alongside improvements to amenities, bedding and onboard service.
Passengers travelling in First, World Traveller Plus and World Traveller will receive new bedding. First Class customers will also be offered new pyjamas as part of the updated range of amenities.
Dining is another area being revamped. Specially trained cabin crew will deliver British Airways’ latest First Class meal service, which is being introduced across the airline’s long-haul fleet rather than being limited solely to the A380.
A new dining concept called ‘From the Grill’ will allow First Class passengers to personalise their meal by selecting from a range of premium proteins. Customers will also be able to choose from a selection of Signature Mains, providing greater flexibility over their onboard dining experience.
The redesigned First seat will include its own mini bar stocked with a selection of premium snacks, adding another element to the airline’s attempt to make the cabin feel more private and luxurious.
British Airways says the overall design direction is intended to give passengers the feeling of being inside a modern luxury hotel rather than a conventional aircraft cabin. The refurbishment therefore extends beyond seats, with materials, finishes, amenities and service all forming part of the wider transformation.
British Airways chairman and chief executive Sean Doyle described the project as an important milestone for the airline and its A380 fleet. He said the company had reconsidered the passenger experience throughout the aircraft, with comfort and an improved overall journey at the centre of the redesign.
The first refurbished A380s are expected to begin flying with passengers in the coming months, giving British Airways’ largest aircraft one of the most substantial cabin transformations in its history.
