Cathay Pacific bans couple following dispute over reclining seat.

Cathay Pacific has barred a couple from flying with the airline after a disagreement on board regarding a fellow passenger’s reclining seat. The incident, which occurred on a flight from Hong Kong to London on 17 September, sparked a significant backlash on social media, where it quickly went viral.

The dispute began when a woman, originally from mainland China, reclined her seat, much to the displeasure of the Hongkonger couple seated behind her. According to the woman’s social media post, the middle-aged husband and wife complained that her seat was blocking their view of the in-flight entertainment system. When she refused to move her seat back to an upright position, tensions escalated.

The woman shared that the situation took a turn for the worse when the wife began harassing her by placing her legs on the armrests of the woman’s seat and hurling insults in Cantonese. The couple’s verbal aggression grew, with the wife allegedly slapping the woman’s arm and referring to her in a derogatory way as “mainland girl” when she realised the woman did not speak Cantonese.

The husband also became involved, forcefully pushing the back of the reclined seat, causing it to vibrate. At one point, the woman captured video footage of the incident, which showed the seat shaking and the wife making a rude gesture. Frustrated, the woman sought assistance from a flight attendant, but was told to adjust her seat. The attendant’s suggestion that she compromise was met with surprise by the woman, as it was not during meal service, and she felt she was being unfairly asked to resolve the issue.

Other passengers who witnessed the altercation condemned the couple’s behaviour, with some publicly chastising them for bullying a younger woman. One onlooker remarked, “Don’t call yourself a Hong Konger, you bully,” while another commented on how inappropriate it was for adults to act in such a manner.

The woman’s post on Xiaohongshu, a Chinese social media platform, received widespread attention, gathering nearly 200,000 likes by Monday. The incident ignited discussions about the appropriate etiquette regarding reclining seats on aeroplanes. While many argued that reclining seats is acceptable, as it is a feature of most airline seats, others noted that excessive reclining can cause discomfort for passengers seated behind.

The debate about in-flight seat etiquette aside, Cathay Pacific took swift action by banning the couple from future flights, reiterating its “zero-tolerance policy” for passengers who exhibit disrespectful or inappropriate behaviour towards others.
