The United States and Cuba have agreed to reintroduce regular commercial flights between the two countries in more than 50 years.
The agreement was made on Thursday, exactly one year since US President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro agreed for the two countries to normalise ties.
Under this new agreement, we may soon see dozens of roundtrip flights from the US to the communist-run island each day. This move will bring us a step closer to the inevitable lifting of the trade embargo that the US has had in place since 1960.
Obama’s decision to relax travel rules to Cuba earlier in the year, has already led to a surge in travel between the two countries by over 70%, according to Reuters.
The US State Department was keen to remind its citizens that touristic travel to Cuba is still prohibited. US citizens must meet one of 12 criteria to be permitted to visit (e.g. visiting family; journalistic purposes). However, many US citizens have easily managed to trick their way into Cuba for a vacation, for example, Jay Z and Beyonce.
