A man who threw coins into a plane engine for good luck has been ordered to pay $17,200 to the Chinese airline.

A Chinese man has been ordered to pay Lucky Air $17,200 in compensation, after he threw “good luck” coins into the plane’s engine.

Lu Chao was boarding a flight in Anqing, Anhui province in February last year when he decided to toss the coins.

Airline staff found two 1 yuan coins on the ground near one of the plane’s engines prompting the budget carrier to cancel the flight.

All passengers were asked to disembark while the aircraft underwent safety checks.

The incident cost Lucky Air a reported ¥140,000 CNY, which the airline vowed to recoup by taking legal action against the passenger.

The court has now ruled that Lu Chao was responsible for ¥120,000 CNY in damages (roughly $17,211) as well as court costs of 459 yuan, or around $65.

Lu has said he cannot afford to pay the damages.
